Hyperliquid Takes 80% of DeFi Perps Market, Hits $30B Daily Volume

Hyperliquid has become the star of decentralized finance by taking more than 80% of the perpetuals market and handling over $30 billion in trades every single day, according to a new report from RedStone

This rise happened in only one year, which is very fast for any crypto platform. RedStone, notes Hyperliquid is now competing with some of the largest centralized exchanges because of its speed, its design, and the way it helps builders.

One of the main reasons for this growth is Hyperliquid’s order book. Most decentralized platforms struggle to keep up with centralized exchanges, but Hyperliquid’s order book runs fully on-chain and still gives the same speed and fair pricing. 

Another reason is due to HIP-3, which is described as Hyperliquid’s permissionless market creation system. This system allows anyone to create new markets without any requirement from a third party.

HIP-3 also shares revenue with developers, and in many cases, these developers earn even more than the protocol itself. RedStone explained that this has encouraged many builders to join, which has turned Hyperliquid into one of the most creative and active communities in decentralized finance.

Hyperliquid also uses a special design made up of HyperCore and HyperEVM. This setup lets users try new financial ideas, such as tokenized perpetual positions and strategies that balance risk. It also gives tools for better liquidity, which is very important for smooth trading. 

“Hyperliquid is setting a new standard,” the RedStone report said. It added that the platform’s design and community-driven approach are opening “unprecedented opportunities for builders and institutions alike.”

Meanwhile, there are numbers to back this up. According to data from DefiLlama, Hyperliquid has more than $2.2 billion locked on its network. In addition to that, it has processed $330 billion in total trading volume in the past 30 days.

What makes this story even more unusual is that Hyperliquid is not backed by large venture capital firms. Instead, it is run by a lean, self-funded team.

Battlefield 6 Devs Will Nerf Jumping, Sliding, And The Shotgun

The recent Battlefield 6 open beta was a massive success for EA and Battlefield Studios, amassing over half a million concurrent players on Steam. But some players weren’t happy about how fast and jumpy movement could be in the online FPS, and others felt the shotgun was too powerful. Now EA has announced that hopping around with a shotty won’t be as effective in the full game.

On August 21, EA and Battlefield Studios published a lengthy community update on Twitter going over what was learned from the beta and what will be changed when the full game launches in October. The big news for many will be that, yes, the devs working on BF6 saw some of those wild videos of players hopping, sliding, and diving around in matches like it’s a modern Call of Duty game and have plans to nerf how fast you slide and how often you can jump.

“Movement mechanics have been adjusted to create a more balanced and traditional Battlefield experience,” said EA in the community update post.  “Momentum, especially horizontal speed, carried from a slide into a jump has been reduced. There is now a greater penalty for consecutive jumps, which lowers jump height when jumps are spammed. Firing while jumping or sliding will result in increased inaccuracy.”

According to the devs, the idea behind these changes is to make jumping and sliding “more situational” and less useful during gunfights, with EA adding that it wants to reward “skillful movement” but doesn’t want gameplay to become “too fast or unpredictable.”

The shotgun in Battlefield 6 is being nerfed

Another complaint out of the Battlefield 6 open beta was that the shotgun carried by assault class players was too powerful. As someone who loved using the shotgun, I disagree entirely and think people need to shut up. But the data does show that the shotgun was very effective at killing people. Maybe too effective? EA thinks so and is nerfing it a bit, explaining: “The M87A1 shotgun now requires more pellets to secure a kill.” So it will still be good up close, but won’t be the powerhouse at medium range like it was in the beta.

Other weapon tweaks include a “general pass on recoil” and tap-firing across all weapons. EA wants to emphasize each gun’s “unique feel” and make sure weapons have more varied effective ranges.  “We’ve also made changes to encourage more controlled tap-firing and burst-firing, rewarding precision and weapon mastery,” said the team.

And EA is “investigating the Time-to-Kill and Time-to-Death experiences” in BF6, but doesn’t have any “definitive” plans yet. Personally, I think people were being weird about time-to-kill in BF6‘s beta, as it is about the same as it was in BF4. But I do agree that sometimes you’d die instantly, and it felt like only one shot. I assume this is down to some network issues that need to be fixed.

Player counts, Rush changes, and more

Elsewhere in the community update, Battlefield Studios talked more about player counts and how they work in BF6. The devs say the number of players in a match isn’t strictly dictated by the mode, but the scale of the map. For example, at launch, some Breakthrough maps will support 48 players, while others will support 64 players. It’s an interesting strategy that lets the devs use every map for every mode, even if it means upping or lowering the maximum number of players that can get in on the action.

EA also talked about Rush and how the more players you add to the mode, the harder it becomes for one side to win. So, based on player feedback from the beta, EA is lowering the default number of players in Rush in the full game in October to give attackers a better chance of winning. Hopefully, the studio also changes where players spawn and how close the objectives are in Rush to help make matches more fun and less of a slog.

Oh, and for players who are part of BF Labs, you’ll get a chance to test out some of the bigger maps coming to BF6 at launch, including the remake of BF3‘s beloved Operation Firestorm. EA confirmed that these two maps will “include the full complement of vehicles…along with a more vast combat space.” So you can stop yelling at EA and Battlefield 6 devs about bigger maps. They’ve told you before and now have explained again: Bigger maps will be in the full game. Relax, okay?

Battlefield 6 launches on October 10 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

A Digital Underground Is Using the Flipper Zero to Break Into Cars

Its creators call it a “multi-tool” device. For many users, it’s a hacking accessory. Since it first debuted in 2020, the Flipper Zero has been considered a fun, low-key pen-tester, but a new report bolsters claims made by the tool’s critics, many of whom have argued that it makes nefarious hacking just a little too easy.

404 Media reports that claims the Flipper has become a favorite in a digital underground where low-level hackers create and sell their own software to modify the tool’s abilities. 404 spoke with a hacker who goes by the moniker “Daniel,” who has been responsible for peddling patches that can turn the Flipper into a car-unlocking device. This customized software is bought and sold with cryptocurrency, the outlet notes. It has two tiers: one worth $600, in which the buyer gets the latest version of the software, and the other costs $1,000 (wherein the buyer gains access to “future upgrades and support”). The hacker told 404 Media that he had sold his wares to approximately 150 people. “Maybe someone is using it to steal from cars or steal cars,” Daniel told them.

Using the simple software workarounds, would-be car thieves seem to have quite a lot of options. Indeed, Daniel’s software patches are alleged to work on a broad variety of car brands. 404 writes:

Daniel shared a PDF which lays out the vehicles the patches allegedly work against. It names nearly 200 specific models of vehicles, including many 2025 versions. As well as Subaru, Fiat, Ford, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Peugeot, Citroën, Volkswagen, Skoda, and Audi, the document also says Honda is in development.

Daniel, who markets his software on YouTube, also told 404 that he had instituted guardrails to keep users from “cracking” his software and thus using it without paying him. However, 404 reports that software like the kind Daniel sells is being cracked, which allows for its broader (and free) distribution.

Flipper doesn’t seem to feel that any of this is its problem. In a statement shared with 404, the company claimed that it was “not aware of any officially confirmed cases of theft using a Flipper Zero.” It added: “We have seen reports from researchers who have used Flipper Zero with third-party software and hardware to exploit brazen vulnerabilities in certain cars. We hope car manufacturers will take the security of their products more seriously and patch them up immediately, as carjackers have access to extremely sophisticated black market tools.” Gizmodo reached out to Flipper Devices for more information.

Authorities have long accused the Flipper of aiding and abetting car thieves. In February of last year, the Canadian government moved to ban the tool, along with other “devices used to steal vehicles by copying the wireless signals for remote keyless entry.” At the time, Flipper’s developers said that they were being unfairly scapegoated as the hacker boogeymen behind the nation’s car theft problem. The COO of Flipper Devices, Alex Kulagin, argued that there were many other devices sold online that were specifically marketed as car entry devices. Developers have also argued that the Flipper helps expose shoddy corporate security practices. Canada subsequently walked back the ban.

The Dark Queen Of Mortholme review

This “short-form, second-person indie” where you play the final boss tells a more traditional and restrained story that its premise might suggest, but it’s still a worthwhile and thoughtful micro-treatise on storytelling, curiosity, stagnation, and heroism.

There’s a beautiful, wordless moment about ten minutes in to The Dark Queen Of Mortholme. As the titular queen, you’ve just casually mace-flattened the same plucky interloper for the Nth time, then snapped their corpse out of existence in a wreath of electric purple fire with all the ceremony of clearing toast crumbs from a bench.

Each time, just as the queen is about to plonk herself back down on her throne, the hero galumphs trumpetously back through the doorway for another pop. Here’s our premise: both an inversion of Soulsian conventions and a wry tribute, in the way all inversions are. And who hasn’t considered how maddeningly Sisyphean it must feel to be on the receiving end of such smug under-doggedness? “Struggle in the face of overwhelming odds”. “Testament to the persistence of the human spirit”. Mate. You are fucking immortal.

We’ve felt the queen’s frustration grow, forced to consider the toll imposed by folklorish infamy on the actual person behind the myth (every time I try to let my hair down some wanker tries to climb up it, says Rapunzel). But on this occasion, something has changed. The hero is late. And there’s an unmistakable hint of longing as the queen looks toward the door. It’s not completely clear if she’s starting to, y’know, actually enjoy all this. But there is both simple truth and stark tragedy in it: unchallenged dominance must feel unbearably stagnant after the initial high wears off. You eat the same soup daily for decades, you might find yourself oddly fond of the fly that decides to one day show up for swimming lessons.

The hero stands completely still during the first fight, and so falls easily to a lazy, disdainful mace swipe. They soon decide that moving is probably a good idea. So, you get a few new moves: a gap-closing spike, and a devastating magic fire that telegraphs its arrival, sportsmanlike as all supermoves should be.

So, of course, the hero works out how to deal with each move in turn. Later, an achievement pops named “out of tricks?” for using each of the queen’s attacks. A trophy that feels like a admission of defeat – a perfect use of digital paraphernalia as storytelling device I wish was more common. Through these warnings of stagnation, glimpses of potential growth present themselves; dialogue options that offer curiosity or dismissiveness. We soon learn the queen doesn’t even know the layout of her own castle. If she did, she might have done a better job of hiding all those treasure chests.

But no, and so the hero returns with chainmail. Then a shortbow. Then a glowing sword and, for the first time, removes the entirety of one of the queen’s four health bar segments. And I realise, then, that they’re going to win eventually. Bloodstains build up until they coat the floor, but my moves are the same each time. The queen, unchallenged, has been given no reason to stay curious, and so has become stagnant. And now, faced for the first time with something that might inspire her to leave and learn some fancier footwork, she’s probably going to die here. Bloody typical, really: a real reason to change showing up just as it becomes too late to do so.

A boss fight demands a theme, and the music here is all apocalyptic organ pipes, rasping with grandeur and nightmares. Somewhere buried in the mix is a toybox melodica; deeply annoying in the way its plastic honking demands focus as soon as I notice it. That’s the hero, I decide, and I think this is the first time I’ve found myself seriously thinking about boss themes; are they meant to celebrate the grandeur and spectacle of the boss, or the struggle of the hero? The best, I think, do both and neither. Odes not to individuals, but to the moment. The dance.

That bastard melodica aside, I have two large problems with The Dark Queen Of Mortholme, an otherwise thumbs-up worthwhile distraction that wastes not a second of runtime in its crushingly inevitable set-up and and crescendo. The first is a line from the queen about halfway through. Something to the tune of “against the might of the status quo, your actions don’t matter”. Ending Explained, you dumb baby! Less on the nose than “got your nose”, honestly.

And the other is not actually in the game, but on the game’s Steam page. “Experience a (macabre, short-form), second-person indie” – immediately relegating the queen to the status of camera lens, of supporting role. You may notice that these two things share a common thread: they both insist on telling me how I’m supposed to feel about a story short enough to offer ample time for self reflection on the average lunchbreak.

But, hey, I can respect it. It’s not my story, after all. Deeply unpopular take maybe, but an artist’s work belongs to them, I’m just visiting. I can’t begrudge the nudges too hard, bumpy as they are. Still, I’m compelled to offer a read in the form of a deeply self-indulgent anecdote. Although, if you want a quick verdict, only interesting games inspire deeply self-indulgent anecdotes, yes.

A writer and person I have a great deal of respect for on both counts once told me, over a plate of stone-cold fried calamari on a pleasant Los Angeles evening I would soon make less pleasant through a callow and selfish acquiescence to my own need to get embarrassingly obliterated in even the most casual of social situations (thus fulfilling my cliched tourist understanding of the average way an LA evening unfolds), that they had become disillusioned with the power of stories to enact meaningful change in the world. I fell back on a pop-science factoid I’m fond of – that of perceptual filling-in. So much is blur and chaos. Dry and tangled, and we cannot live without the artifice of beginnings, middles, and ends. The motivation and the obstacles. The reasons for going along with this chaotic mess in the first place.

Stories can’t lose their power because they’re the fuel, the driver. I cannot remember what they said next, because I am a ridiculous prick who often forgets to listen to other people when I am too busy waiting for their approval at my having said something I believe to be insightful. I am convinced to this day that if I’d have just listened, I’d have a more more nuanced view on these things that I currently do. Maybe they would have disabused me of this notion completely, but it’s one I still hold: stories are all we’ve got, and good stories from elsewhere are the only thing powerful enough to change how we see the stories that are assigned to us.

At least, that’s the story I tell myself. The story the Dark Queen Of Mortholme tells is one where the hero still gets all the best lines. In this, it’s quite traditional, despite its novel framing. The queen’s real tragedy, as with so many characters that threaten to break convention, is that whatever she does, she’s still trapped in a story. And, either through aims or just convention, it’s someone else’s story at that.

“Perhaps it would be a mercy,” muses the queen on the possibility of the hero’s defeat and surrender. “To be relieved of the burden of trying?”, the hero replies. “No thanks!” (Princess!)

Sounds good, right? And I love it, honestly. It made me feel like fighting. But god, if anything could convince you that, really, there are no new stories, then what better than a game that presents itself as subversion, and ends up in exactly the same place as everything else.

Major US cryptocurrency exchange Gemini appears to be on track to release an XRP-themed card, according to its Thursday post on social media. 

The exchange has placed a billboard in a busy commercial area of Manhattan in order to promote the new product, which is slated to be released on Aug. 19. 

As reported by U.Today, Gemini recently teased the “next era” of XRP rewards ahead of the Thursday reveal. 

That said, the most recent announcement has attracted some backlash from the exchange’s Bitcoin-centric users, who have slammed the exchange for actively advertising the token that they deem to be centralized.

Some XRP holders have also questioned whether the launch of the product (and the billboard in a busy neighbourhood of Manhattan) will have any impact on the price of the Ripple-linked token, which has been struggling to pick up more steam as of late. 

Gemini’s XRP rewards program 

The launch of Gemini’s XRP card comes after the exchange also launched rewards for the popular Ripple-linked altcoin in March. This made it possible for the holders of the cryptocurrency to earn up to 4% cashback with Gemini’s credit card. 

Now, Gemini is specifically launching an XRP-centric credit card to further cater to the community. 

From haters to cheerleaders 

Gemini’s newfound love for XRP is a relatively recent phenomenon. In fact, Tyler Winklevoss, the co-founder of the leading US cryptocurrency exchange, has openly feuded with the community behind the token after refusing to list the token.

In fact, Gemini refused to list XRP even after Ripple dangled $1 million in front of it, according to the SEC’s complaint. 

However, following Ripple’s legal victory, the exchange moved to list XRP in August 2023.

Africa Is Buying a Record Number of Chinese Solar Panels

While overall sales to African countries are still small compared to these traditional export markets, the Global South appears to be at a turning point in how it thinks about energy. For decades, energy-starved countries largely had one default option when they wanted to add new power supply: import coal and gas. Now, for the first time, solar energy is emerging as the cheaper and greener way forward, so there’s no need to sacrifice the environment for development.

Familiar Story

What’s happening in Africa right now might sound familiar, especially if you know anything about the global green energy industry. We’ve seen several versions of this story before, most notably in Pakistan last year.

In 2024, Pakistan installed about 15 Gigawatts of solar panels; for context, the country’s total peak electricity demand is about 30 Gigawatts. Households put so many panels on their rooftops that Pakistani cities now look visibly different on satellite maps. The trend is threatening the future of Pakistan’s national grid because people are using their own panels to generate power, reducing the need to buy electricity from the grid. And almost all of this happened because the country was mass-importing solar panels from its neighbor and ally, China.

A similar trend happened in South Africa in 2023. The utility infrastructure in both countries is not resilient enough to meet peak demand, causing consistent blackouts that pushed consumers to look for alternative energy sources. The government introduced policies that made solar especially attractive, like tax breaks for buying panels or paying people for transmitting excess energy to the grid.

But across the board, the main thing driving the popularity of solar is simple: the cost to purchase and install Chinese panels has gotten so low that the world has reached an inflection point. Even if a country isn’t particularly worried about climate change, it simply makes economic sense to generate energy from solar, says Anika Patel, China analyst at Carbon Brief, a climate policy publication.

“A lot of African nations right now just need more electricity. And the fact that there is this option to install solar plants at a fraction of the cost of building a new coal or gas plant is attractive,” she says.

Price is an especially important factor for African countries, because it’s harder to get a loan to fund a solar power plant project there than in developed countries, says Léo Echard, policy officer at the Global Solar Council and the author of a report on Africa’s solar market. Since Chinese solar companies have significant price advantages over manufacturers in other countries, they are always the go-to option for supplying Africa’s solar demand.

From Massive Plants to Rooftops

There are two types of demand driving the solar boom in African countries, Echard says. In North Africa, countries like Algeria and Egypt are building massive utility-scale solar power plants that require large numbers of panels. But in Sub-Sahara Africa, the panels are being imported by more rural communities in places that traditionally haven’t been connected to the grid at all.

Just like in Pakistan, this network of distributed rooftop solar panels is transforming the energy landscape. People are getting access to energy, and that access isn’t dependent on government spending or foreign loans. Instead, it spreads organically, household by household, as long as the panels are cheap enough.

Razer and Side launch large-scale playtesting solution that could reduce costs by 80%

Video game services provider Side and technology and hardware firm Razer have teamed up to launch a playtesting solution that can scale to more than 100,000 players.

Dubbed ‘Razer Cortex: Playtest Program – Powered by Side’, the new technology sits within the Razer Cortex launcher, which provides access to games from different platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as offering functionality such as video capture.

By clicking on the ‘Playtest’ tab within Cortex, users can now become playtesters for various games. To sign up, players have to agree to a set of binding NDAs, then they are allowed access to a build of a work in progress title.

Cortex tracks playtime and performance data, and players can submit reports that log the things they like and dislike about the game, as well as reporting bugs.

Players are incentivized to sign up to the playtesting program by receiving Razer Silver for completing set playtime milestones. These credits can then be exchanged for rewards such as headphones.

Cortex has more than 50 million users worldwide, meaning game developers can potentially tap into an enormous group of playtesters across various countries and demographics.

At Gamescom, GamesIndustry.biz caught up with Harlan Beverly, chief technology officer of Side, to find out more about the new system.

“We’re changing the paradigm of playtesting,” he says.

Historically, playtesting meant “you hired 10 or 20 gamers, and you videoed them playing the game, and you interviewed them,” he explains.

“But with 50 million gamers willing to sign NDAs and go through the hoops of security, we can now do massive-scale pre-alpha play testing, which has never been possible before.”

The key aspect is that in addition to enabling enormous playtesting cohorts, the system uses AI to automatically process and provide insights into the huge volumes of data that are generated.

“The hardest thing about doing something like this is you get 100,000 players all giving feedback at the same time,” says Beverly. But the AI can quickly sift through all of that data and pick out key trends.

It produces a spreadsheet that, in addition to listing all of the scores and comments from anonymised users, provides a summary of what players think and what aspects they would like to see improved.

“One of the coolest [pieces of] AI tech that’s behind the scenes here is we are de-duplicating the bugs,” adds Beverly.

So rather than listing 100,000 instances of the same bug, the system can recognise when an identical bug is being reported, even if the language used to report it differs, then list it as a single bug.

The system can also automatically generate Jira tickets for each bug.

But what about worries that leaks could result from providing access to an unreleased and potentially unannounced game to thousands of people?

Beverly says there are strong deterrents for leakers in the NDAs. “If you get caught leaking stuff, then you’re going to lose your Razer Silver and Razer account,” he says.

In addition, he notes that companies can choose to limit the size of the playtesting cohort and add eligibility criteria that, for example, would only allow access for highly trusted players.

The big advantage of the Playtest Program is that not only can it offer scale, it’s also potentially much cheaper than manually gathering playtesters together, notes Beverly.

He says the company estimates that the system could generate savings of up to 80% versus bringing in playtesters on an hourly rate.

Eric Vezzoli, director of technology at Razer, is bullish about the system’s prospects. “We think it should be a game changer,” he says.

Tales Of Xillia Remastered Getting Physical PS5 And Switch Versions

Tales of Xillia Remastered launches for PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 31. This remaster brings the 2011 PS3 action RPG to modern platforms for the first time, and upgrades the experience with higher-resolution visuals, a new auto-save system, and other gameplay tweaks. It also includes most of the DLC content released for the original PS3 version–minus a few licensed costumes. Tales of Xillia Remastered will be available digitally on all platforms, but physical editions will be available for PS5 and Switch. Preorders are available for $40 at Amazon.

Tales of Xillia Remastered follows dual protagonists Milla and Jude, fugitives on the run after accidentally uncovering a nefarious plot by the Kingdom of Rashugal to create a weapon of mass destruction. The pair vow to prevent Rashugal from using the weapon, setting them off on a journey across the magical world of Rieze Maxia. Along the way, they amass a team of party members to aid in their mission. As the party, players explore a vast overworld and explore towns and dungeons. The game uses a unique action combat system where two party members sync up to deliver powerful “Link Arte” attacks.

The original Tales of Xillia was the thirteenth Tale game to be released at the time, though like most of the games in the series, Xillia features its own story and can be enjoyed without having played the others, However, Xillia also got a direct follow-up, Tales of Xillia 2, that takes place one year after the events of the first game, and given how many other Tales games have received remasters in the last few years, it seems likely we could see a remaster for Xillia 2 soon. And when we say soon, we mean it–the latest Tales remaster release, Tales of Graces f Remastered, launched earlier this year on January 17. Like Xillia, it also got a physical release on Switch and PS5, which you can grab for $30 at Amazon. Tales of Symphonia was also remastered a few years ago. Physical copies are harder to come by, but you can grab PS4, Xbox One, and Switch copies at Amazon.

While these remasters are great for exploring older Tales games, those who want to check out the newest games in the series can grab Tales of Arise, which launched back in 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC, or Tales of Zestria, which launched on PS4 in 2015. Physical console versions for both games are available at Amazon, while PC players can pick them up at a discount at Fanatical. In fact, several other Tales PC releases are on sale at Fanatical, including Tales of Berseria, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, and Tales of Symphonia.
