Trader Goes From $43M To $770,000 As Ethereum Price Retraces, Here’s How

A legendary ETH trader who once turned a modest $125,000 into more than $43 million has seen nearly his entire fortune vanish following the latest Ethereum price decline. According to reports, the trader went long on ETH during the recent bull rally but was liquidated, leaving his balance at $771,000 as prices retraced sharply from highs.

In one of the most dramatic downturns in recent trading history, a legendary trader who built a reputation for turning $125,000 into $43 million has just witnessed a devastating loss. Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain reports that the trader reopened a long position on Ethereum, only to be caught in the latest price crash. The sharp correction had wiped out his leverage, triggering liquidations that erased $6.22 million and left his account with just $771,000. 

Until recently, the trader had built a strong portfolio, capitalizing on the recent Ethereum price rally through a series of well-timed positions. Just days ago, he exited a massive 66,749 ETH long worth $303 million, securing $6.86 million in profit which equates to a 55x gain on his initial capital of $125,000. At the peak of his run, his total equity had exceeded $43 million, a 344x increase from where he started. 

The week’s crash, however, unraveled nearly all of the trader’s progress. In just two days, Lookonchain reports that four months of gains were erased, leaving him with a fraction of where he once stood. The decline from his $43 million peak underscores a much deeper collapse—one worth approximately $42.2 million. 

For a trader who came close to pulling off one of the most successful ETH trades this year, the dramatic reversal seen in the Ethereum price highlights the brutal volatility of the market. It also underscores the dangers of holding overleveraged positions and the risk of failing to secure gains while market prices were still climbing. 

Analyst Says Ethereum Pullback Is Healthy

The Ethereum price saw a 10% decline this week, triggering a wave of liquidations and broad market sell-offs. However, analysts suggest that ETH’s retracement may not be a cause for panic. Mark Newton, a technical analyst and managing director/global head of technology strategy at Fundstrat, noted that Ethereum is undergoing what he considers a healthy pullback. 

In an email to Fundstrat’s CIO and Head of Research, Thomas Lee, Newton highlighted that ETH is consolidating around the $4,075 – $4,150 range, which he views as a favorable risk-reward zone for midweek. The technical analyst confirmed that the recent Ethereum price decline is consistent with Elliott Wave patterns and should not be interpreted as the end of Ethereum’s bullish momentum.

Instead, he believes that after this brief correction, Ethereum could rise toward a new all-time high near $5,100. Based on this bullish thesis, the retracement represents a temporary cooling phase rather than the beginning of a prolonged downturn.

Kinsta also released a tool called Edge Caching. This is an incredibly powerful tool for websites running WordPress that can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to serve cached HTML to site visitors. Edge Caching is included free with all Kinsta plans, and no additional plugins are required.

Kinsta’s Edge Caching works by saving your website/page cache to Cloudflare’s global network of over 260 data centers. When site visitors load your website, cached responses will be delivered from the location closest to them, helping to reduce latency and ensure faster loading times.

With the help of the Early Hints, you can further improve site speed. Early hints is a modern web standard that defines a new 103 HTTP status code. Enabling this web standard on your site, it gives your site visitors’ browsers the chance to download certain resources in advance or in parallel with others. This results in a faster page rendering speed.

A curiosity of Kinsta’s hosting, but one that we found made sense, is the apparent lack of a temporary URL for checking the site runs accurately. However, this is a feature that can be easily turned on and off, and lasts for around 60 minutes when enabled. Given that a site doesn’t need to be seen by the public or crawlers before launch, this is useful.

It also includes an extra site, for your agency. 500,000 visits, 50GB of storage, and 1,000GB CDN storage makes this an attractive starting point, but Agency 40 ($375/month with annual billing) and Agency 60 ($563/month under the same terms) are also available, with corresponding increases in installs.

These plans also include a white label provision, removing the Kinsta branding for reselling the hosting to the client, and access to beta tools. Backups, advanced caching, and migrations are also included with these packages, along with that all-important developer support. Kinsta speed and experience

Kinsta argues that it is almost a certainty that users will see “faster page load times, along with back-end (WordPress dashboard) speed” when hosting with them. Faster than what, we asked ourselves. Faster than the average speed, faster than lightning or faster than Superman?

In any case, GTmetrix (a tool we used to test the speed performance of Kinsta’s main website) appears to agree with them given that it rated the performance of their website with an A (91%), which is not a result we often see. All major core metrics related to the speed were above the average, which looks pretty promising.

When it comes to uptime, Kinsta’s technical team monitors all of its users’ websites at all times, which means that they will be notified if any downtime occurs and lasts longer than five minutes, and, thus, prompt them to rush to resolve the issue. After monitoring Kinsta’s main website for a month using UptimeRobot, we couldn’t find a single trace of downtime, which does inspire confidence.

Latest results

We recently ran more tests on Kinsta for our best hosting for agencies guide. We did the same test we do for every host. We migrate a simple website and perform some baseline WordPress benchmark test and do some Siege testing for concurrent visitors. We used the Agency 20 plan. While these don’t show what the server is like under load. It does show a good baseline score for site performance.

Kinsta alternatives

Much like Kinsta, Flywheel is a fellow US-based host specialized in “top-of-the-line” managed WordPress hosting solutions. Both of them strive to be beginner-friendly, offer well-rounded, feature-packed packages and are on the high-priced side of the spectrum. However, Kinsta’s least expensive solution starts at a whopping $30, half as much as what is offered by Flywheel. Therefore, if the price is the key criterion (since both hosts are competent) for you, you could save some bucks by going with Flywheel.

Bluehost is one of the most popular hosting options on the market today, even when it comes to managed WordPress hosting. In comparison with Kinsta, Bluehost has a myriad of hosting types and options besides WordPress and its WordPress plans are well-structured and suitable for newcomers. If you are, however, looking for premium managed WordPress options, you might find yourself at home with Kinsta.

DreamHost is a US-based provider supplying WordPress-optimized hosting solutions and related services, including a domain registration, which is something you won’t get with Kinsta. Another thing they don’t provide is a website builder and you’ll have that as an option with DreamHost. What is more, in addition to offering more hosting options, DreamHost has more pocket-friendly plans, so you’ll save some money as well.

Although HostGator does not specialize in WordPress hosting, it has a few rather attractive solutions on the offer. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a premium fully managed WordPress hosting (and you are ready to shell out the money) Kinsta might be a better pick. If you would rather have something simpler and more on the affordable side, HostGator is an excellent choice.

Earlier today, Team Cherry finally announced a release date for its long-awaited Hollow Knight sequel Silksong. After seven years, it will finally be out next month.

Yet contrary to what you may believe, Silksong hasn’t been in development hell for that time. Instead, Team Cherry’s developers were just having too much fun making it.

In fact, sales of the original game have skyrocketed from 2.8m copies to 15m copies since Silksong’s announcement in 2019, giving the studio the financial freedom to take their time.

What was originally intended as an expansion to Hollow Knight soon ballooned into its own game, with the studio announcing in February 2019 it would be a full sequel.

“Even at that point we were recognising that it was going to become another giant thing to rival the scale of Hollow Knight or probably exceed it,” Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson told Bloomberg. “And then because of how we work, obviously the world ended up being just as big or bigger. And the quest system existed. And the multiple towns existed. Suddenly you end up six, seven years later.”

“It was never stuck or anything,” Gibson added. “It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time. There wasn’t any big controversial moment behind it.”

That 12m rise in sales of the original Hollow Knight is extraordinary. Somehow, Team Cherry inadvertently created the ultimate hype machine: hype for the sequel led to sales for the original, which meant it could take longer to develop, which fed the hype even more due to silence, which became a meme, which meant it could take even longer.

“We’re very lucky in that regard,” said Gibson. “I don’t ever really think about it that much. Maybe that’s the privilege of it.”

No strict deadline and a flood of financial income meant Team Cherry could take its time. It’s in stark contrast to so many other studios at the moment hell-bent on chasing trends and generating cash in the face of rising development costs, which has inevitably resulted in the mass layoffs across the industry in the last couple of years.

By contrast, Team Cherry has remained lean. What’s more, it’s spent the past seven years enjoying development.

“We’ve been having fun,” said Gibson said. “This whole thing is just a vehicle for our creativity anyway. It’s nice to make fun things.

“We’re very fortunate that we have a development method that is so enjoyable,” Gibson continued. “Not exactly sure how we stumbled into that. Everything comes together quickly. You can see results fast. Ideas turn into something that exist in the game almost immediately before your eyes, and that’s very satisfying. And that allows you to go off on those tangents and meet weird characters because someone’s off-handedly mentioned a weird character as an idea and the other person’s laughed, and that’s enough.”

“You’re always working on a new idea, new item, new area, new boss,” added co-founder William Pellen. “That stuff’s so nice. It’s for the sake of just completing the game that we’re stopping. We could have kept going.”

Add to that a desire for exceptional polish, and it’s easy to see how development could have continued even longer.

“I think we’re always underestimating the amount of time and effort it’ll take us to achieve things,” said Gibson. “It’s also that problem where, because we’re having fun doing it, it’s not like, ‘It’s taking longer, this is awful, we really need to get past this phase.’ It’s, ‘This is a very enjoyable space to be in. Let’s perpetuate this with some new ideas.'”

“There’s a level of finish that has to be met throughout the entire game,” added Pellen. “All the way the systems interact, all the hidden work that pops up later on. It’s multiplicative. As you add stuff, the process of tying it all back together just increases.”

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Silksong will fully live up to the hype, but with its release date of 4th September it won’t be long until we find out. At the least, it follows games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as a project with a relatively small team and a huge amount of passion finding big success, where so many AAA studios and publishers have stumbled.

Winklevoss-backed Gemini gets EU-wide pass through Malta’s MiCA nod

According to an official announcement on August 21, the crypto exchange Gemini has secured a MiCA license from the Malta Financial Services Authority. The regulatory green light grants the Winklevoss twins-founded company a passport to offer its suite of services, including custody and trading, across all 27 European Union member states, plus several additional jurisdictions in the European Economic Area.

The approval, confirmed in the MFSA’s official registry, streamlines Gemini’s expansion from a nation-by-nation grind to a single, bloc-wide deployment. For the EU, it is a sign that heavyweight exchanges are willing to play by its rulebook, presenting a test case for whether clear regulation can deliver both growth and guardrails in an industry that has often thrived in legal gray zones.

A license that completes Gemini’s regulatory arsenal

This MiCA authorization arrives just months after Gemini secured a critical Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) license in May. That earlier approval authorized the exchange to offer derivative products to European clients.

The combination of the MiFID II and MiCA licenses can be seen as the “gold standard” for EU operation, transforming Gemini from a basic crypto service provider into a fully-compliant, multifaceted trading venue capable of handling a complex array of digital asset products.

Capitalizing on its MiFID II status, Gemini rolled out tokenized stocks for European users in late June. These blockchain-based tokens, which represent shares of traditional equities and trade nearly around-the-clock, represent the exact type of innovative financial product the EU hopes to cultivate under its new regulatory regime.

Gemini’s approval places it among a small vanguard of exchanges to receive the MiCA nod from the Malta Financial Services Authority. According to the official MFSA registry, it joins just four other crypto asset service providers: Bitpanda, Crypto.com, OKX, and ZBX.

U.S. Justice Department Official Says Writing Code Without Bad Intent ‘Not a Crime’

A senior official at the U.S. Department of Justice knew the crypto audience in Wyoming had fresh software developer convictions on its mind when he told them on Thursday that his department doesn’t want to go after digital assets software developers who don’t have money-laundering intentions.

Matthew Galeotti, acting assistant attorney general in the DOJ’s criminal division, made those assurances at an event hosted by the new crypto group American Innovation Project, drawing vigorous applause.

“The department will not use federal criminal statutes to fashion a new regulatory regime over the digital asset industry,” he said. “The department will not use indictments as a lawmaking tool. The department should not leave innovators guessing as to what could lead to criminal prosecution.”

He added that “merely writing code without ill intent is not a crime.”

Those sentiments arrive against the backdrop of a couple of recent courtroom developments in which U.S. prosecutors won convictions against crypto developers. Most prominently, Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm was found guilty of running an unlawful money transmitting business.

That followed closely on the heels of a plea agreement involving the developers behind Samourai Wallet pleading guilty to conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business — a significantly lesser charge to what they’d originally faced.

Galeotti directly addressed concerns about that specific criminal code they were all convicted under. He said the DOJ wouldn’t use it in crypto cases unless prosecutors have “evidence that a defendant knew of the specific legal requirements and willfully violated it.”

He said new charges won’t be pressed under that code in cases in which “software is truly decentralized and solely automates peer-to-peer transactions, and where a third party does not have custody and control over user assets.”

An April memo issued by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche had set out the stance of the department under the leadership appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump. It noted the national cryptocurrency enforcement team had been disbanded and said the DOJ would take a careful approach to crypto cases after the previous administration “created a particularly uncertain regulatory environment around digital assets.” Despite the Blanche memo, the Southern District of New York (SDNY) pressed forward with their cases against Storm and the Samoruai Wallet developers.

“Developers of neutral tools with no criminal intent should not be held responsible for someone else’s misuse of these tools,” Galeotti said at the Thursday event, the first held by the AIP that was launched this week. “If a third party’s misuse violates criminal law, then that third party should be prosecuted, not the well-intentioned developer.”

The protection of crypto software developers has been a central lobbying point for the industry in its negotiations with lawmakers and regulators in Washington. The crypto market structure legislation currently moving through Congress has included protections of such developers, though the final version isn’t yet set in the Senate.

“The fact that the DOJ acknowledged that software developers should not be held responsible for third parties’ misuse of their code affirms what we have been advocating for years,” said Amanda Tuminelli, executive director of the DeFi Education Fund, in a statement after Galeotti’s remarks. “Let’s celebrate this as a moment of progress and remember that there is still more work to be done to change the law permanently.”

TikToker Malik Taylor dead at 28 years old

TikTok creator Malik Taylor, best known online as The Unpopular Party, has died at the age of 28.

Taylor gained popularity on TikTok and YouTube with his comedic recaps and commentary. He left his teaching job in Memphis in 2023 to pursue content creation full-time, quickly building a strong following across platforms.

On TikTok, Taylor amassed more than 250,000 followers. His YouTube channel also grew to nearly 80,000 subscribers, where he continued to post long-form videos and community-driven content.

Malik Taylor dies aged 28

The news was revealed by his business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, in a post on Instagram.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share our beloved Brother, Malik Taylor, has gone to ‘Audit Eternal’,” they said. “To know him was to know he was a light to everyone—always bringing laughter, joy, and a warm smile that brightened every room he entered.

“Brother Taylor embodied the values of brotherhood, unity, and compassion. His ability to uplift others, share kindness, and spread joy will forever remain in our memories.”

They continued: “Though your time with us was far too short, you were a good and faithful Brother, and the “Great Auditor” will reward you for your everlasting work. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who loved him.

“Rest in peace, Malik Taylor, Zeta Phi Chapter Spring 2017. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will continue to inspire us.”

His cause of death has yet to be confirmed by authorities.

Singapore Bank DBS Debuts Tokenized Structured Notes on Ethereum

Singaporean bank DBS will tokenize structured notes using Ethereum, the company announced Thursday.

The bank said it had partnered with digital platforms ADDX, DigiFT, and HydraX to distribute the product.

Structured notes blend debt securities and derivatives contracts to provide investors with exposure to a range of assets, including stocks and commodities. They are linked to an underlying asset and pay the investor a regular return. 



With DBS’s latest product, the underlying asset will be cryptocurrencies. 

“The note structure provides investors with a cash payout when cryptocurrency prices rise, enabling them to build exposure to the asset class without having to manage any cryptocurrency,” the bank said. “The note is also structured to mitigate potential losses should cryptocurrency prices decline.”

DBS said that by tokenizing such assets, they can become “more fungible and easier to trade.” 

“Asset tokenisation is the next frontier of financial markets infrastructure,” DBS’ Head of Foreign Exchange and Digital Assets, Global Financial Markets, Li Zhen, said. 

“Our first tokenised product, a crypto-linked note, also addresses the growing institutional appetite for digital assets,” he added. 

DBS did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

The bank isn’t the first to offer such a product. Wall Street giant BlackRock, the world’s biggest fund manager, debuted its first tokenized fund last year. Its USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund runs on Ethereum. And BlackRock CEO and one-time crypto skeptic Larry Fink has repeatedly spoken about tokenizing assets. 

Other major financial services firms are also exploring tokenization initiatives, including Bank of America and Citi. In a report this May, the World Economic Forum said that tokenization had “the potential to unlock the next generation of value exchange in financial markets.”

“While barriers remain, momentum continues to build, and financial institutions, policy-makers and technology providers need to coordinate regulation, interoperability and consumer protections to safely usher in this evolution,” the authors of “Asset Tokenization in Financial Markets: The Next Generation of Value Exchange” wrote.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War IV Makes Me Want To Become An RTS Sicko

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV was originally on my Gamescom schedule as “Unannounced RTS game,” and I took the appointment out of pure curiosity. I haven’t played an RTS game in ages, save for the excellent Pikmin games, and I wanted to know what “unannounced” was – when I saw Dawn of War IV announced during Opening Night Live earlier this week, I immediately knew it was the game I had an appointment booked for. 

I’ll be honest: my excitement for this appointment was quickly dampened when I saw the reveal trailer for Dawn of War IV. I’m not super familiar with the Warhammer 40,000 franchise, save for last year’s great Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, and, as I already mentioned, RTS games aren’t really for me. Fast forward two days later and I’m sitting on a bench in Cologne, Germany, an hour separated from my hour-long Dawn of War IV hands-on preview, eating those words (or thoughts, rather – I promise I didn’t talk out loud while sitting surrounded by strangers during Opening Night Live). 

 

Now, let me preface this: I didn’t do well during my hands-on preview of the game. In fact, I struggled to make any forward progress as the Blood Ravens (Space Marine) faction against the Orks. Sitting in a room surrounded by other members of the press who clearly live and breathe RTS games, I knew I was doing terribly. However, it’s how poorly I was doing that has me wanting to play this game more; I’m even considering giving the older Dawn of War games a try, though it’s clear based on the in-room sentiment that I should avoid Dawn of War III. 

Not only did I have a good time tinkering with Dawn of War IV’s many, many, many systems, units, buildings, and more, but I feel compelled to learn how this RTS series works, if only, at least, to go back and defeat the Orks in that single mission. It wasn’t like playing a Soulslike or another challenging type of game where I just need to keep practicing; I need to learn Dawn of War IV’s systems, understand how different combos work best together, and learn the strategy behind gaining ground, winning and holding control points, and ultimately, defeating the enemy. 

The single pre-alpha mission I played was simple: defeat the Ork base. I began at the bottom of the map and that base was at the top. Dotted in between their base and mine were various neutral control points. Taking them over allows me to build various buildings where I can deploy more troops, elite soldiers, vehicles, and more. You absolutely cannot win without winning these control points, as they effectively allow you to move your base of operations and army manufacturing sites forward. Other than that, I needed to direct my soldiers and vehicles to hordes of enemies to defeat. It’s all simple on paper, but much harder in execution. 

I sucked at it. I don’t want to suck at it. My desire to play more is rooted in beating this mission one day. I suppose this is a roundabout way of saying I think Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV is going to be a hit because if it has me wanting more, I can only imagine what those who already love these games are going to feel. And let’s be real: this all might be a way for me to justify the horrid RTS performance I turned in today. 

 

If you’re already a Dawn of War fan and are not enthused reading an amateur’s thoughts on the newly announced entry in the long-running hardcore RTS series, don’t worry – I’m a much better notetaker than I am a Blood Raven commander and I have plenty to share about what to expect in Dawn of War IV when it launches next year. I’ve listed them below in bullet form for easy digestion: 

  • There are over 10,000 permutations for combat, thanks to different factions, all the units, abilities, and more.
  • Developer King Art Games says this is going to be the biggest Dawn of War game in series history in terms of content and game modes that will be available at launch.
  • Dawn of War IV will launch with Skirmish, Multiplayer (co-op for Skirmish and Campaign), and Last Stand.
  • There are four playable factions, and each has its own Campaign:
    • Space Marine: the Blood Ravens
    • Adeptus Mechanicus: this is their debut as a playable faction; they are zealous tech priests that use data and connectivity to augment forces and overcome foes.
    • Necrons: one of the biggest factions; originally promised for Dawn of War III, but wasn’t delivered.
    • Orks: They rely on brute force and overwhelming numbers to beat enemies to a pulp.
  • Each faction has well over a dozen missions to its name:
    • Not every mission will be playable in your first playthrough, as critical narrative choices will change how your Campaign plays out.
  • Dawn of War IV will feature a “flagship story campaign” with a narrative written by Black Library author John French, who has written various books set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
  • Dawn of War IV marks a return to the planet Kronus, last seen in the first Dawn of War game.
  • Three returning characters (so far, at least):
    • Cyrus, Chief Librarian Jonah Orion, and Ork boss Gorgutz
  • There are over 40 minutes of “gorgeous” cinematics in the game.

To the dismay of sweaty ‘movement kids,’ Battlefield 6 is nerfing Call of Duty sliding and jumping to maintain a ‘traditional Battlefield experience’

Duck, dive, and dodge: Following feedback from the Battlefield 6 beta that its movement was too squirrely and unpredictable, Battlefield Studios is planning significant changes for the full release.

The announcement came in an “Open Beta Debrief” blog published on Battlefield’s official social channels, which, in addition to movement, touched on hot topics like map size, Rush, and weapon balance. While the takeaway from most of those topics could be summed up as “we’re looking into it” or “wait and see,” movement is one area that already has significant changes in progress.

“Movement mechanics have been adjusted to create a more balanced and traditional Battlefield experience. Momentum, especially horizontal speed, carried from a slide into a jump has been reduced. There is now a greater penalty for consecutive jumps, which lowers jump height when jumps are spammed,” the blog reads.

That momentum change is likely more of a bug fix than a change in direction, as players figured out early on in the BF6 beta that you could consistently pull off ridiculous super jumps by exploiting small bursts of speed from jumping and sliding.

BF Studios is also targeting accuracy while jumping and sliding. Series veterans argued throughout the beta that there wasn’t enough of an accuracy penalty for shooting while sliding into a room or jumping around corners—hallmark tools of Call of Duty “movement kids”—and developers agree.

“Firing while jumping or sliding will result in increased inaccuracy,” the post continues. “These changes are designed to make sliding and jumping more situational, so they are no longer ideal options for engaging in gunfights, and will contribute to a gameplay pace that rewards skillful movement without becoming too fast or unpredictable.”

Whether or not you liked BF6’s squirrelly beta movement, it was undeniably chaotic. A top-upvoted post on the Battlefield subreddit highlights an extreme case of someone constantly chaining jumps and slides to ice skate across the map while maintaining perfect accuracy.

How much freedom of movement is considered overboard depends on the series’ roots, but even FPSes known for speed struggle to satisfy everyone. In 2023, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 cranked up the bunnyhopping and slide-canceling just a year after Modern Warfare 2 deliberately slowed things down, to the delight of many and horror of CoD traditionalists. As I wrote in 2023:

“Players who use these slippery moves will tell you it raises Call of Duty’s skill ceiling, and they’re technically right. FPSes have a long tradition of adopting community-developed movement techniques until they’re unofficial canon, and CoD is no different, except that I find this example of it extremely annoying… A lobby full of jumping beans distorts the horizontal, boots-on-the-ground rhythm of CoD into discount Apex Legends. It also, as I really must emphasize, looks very stupid.”

It’s nice to see BF Studios getting ahead of important mechanical details like this. We’re still two months from launch day, but it turns out there will be another round of Battlefield Labs testing before then. The next Labs test will finally introduce us to BF6’s two biggest maps at launch: Mirak Valley and Operation Firestorm.
