A surprise gamescom announcement: Outlaws is coming back. The Lucasfilm 1997 first person shooter is certainly a classic, and Nightdive Studios expertise is bringing back classic games. The trailer looks inspired, check it out below along with info on the remaster.

Ethereum, Bitcoin Spike After Powell Signals Interest Rate Cut

The price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signaled the possibility of an interest rate cut in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Within 15 minutes of Powell’s speech starting, Bitcoin jumped above $114,700 from $112,000, a nearly 2.5% gain, while Ethereum surged to $4,600 from $4,300, an almost 7% increase, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Both cryptocurrencies remained down 2.9% and 1.4%, respectively, over the past week.

By the time Powell was done with his remarks, altcoins were soaring. XRP and Solana had both surged more than 6% in less than an hour, with XRP regaining the $3 threshold for the first time since Tuesday. Dogecoin leapt more than 7% for the same time frame. However, most altcoins tracked by CoinGecko were still slightly in the red on the week, a sign of investors’ earlier angst about the Fed’s path forward.

An interest rate cut would likely buoy cryptocurrency and other risk-on assets by boosting liquidity for investment. U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring Powell relentlessly to slash rates amid concerns that the economy is slowing.



In a Myriad Linea market, 87% of respondents expect the Fed to change the interest rate, up from closer to 70% earlier this week.

Powell was steadfast in his assessment that the central bank faces elevated inflation risks compared to the labor market, but he said that the central bank is prepared to adjust its policy stance if its dual mandate of full employment and stable prices is in conflict.

Caveating that the central bank is not on any preset course, Powell said “the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance,” indicating that the central bank may lower interest rates at its September meeting.

Still, Powell warned that inflation from Trump’s tariffs has not been fully reflected in economic data, and it could be that way for months.

“It will continue to take more time for tariff increases to work their way through supply chains and distribution networks,” he said. “Come what may, we will not allow a one-time increase in the price level to become an ongoing inflation problem.”

Analysts say that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were falling earlier this week in anticipation of Powell’s eighth and final speech in Jackson Hole as Fed chair. With markets positioned for easing in September, they said “cautiously hawkish” remarks could disappoint investors.

Bitwise Senior Investment Strategist Juan Leon told Decrypt on Thursday that he expected Powell to focus on sticky inflation and tariff uncertainty, while avoiding any pre-commitment to a rate cut in September and potentially pressuring risk-on assets with a firmer tone.

Powell looked back on the COVID-19 pandemic in defending his tenure as Fed chair. The central bank took drastic measures to stabilize markets and stimulate growth as the U.S. economy ground to a halt nearly overnight. And as a red-hot economy roared back from pandemic-related pressures, inflation peaked at a four-decade high of 9.1% in June 2022.

It’s been over two months since Trump Mobile announced the T1 Phone was being “Made in the USA” designed “with American values in mind,” and it seems that anyone deciding to preorder it still can’t be sure exactly what phone they might receive.

In posts on X and Instagram on Wednesday, the Trump Mobile account encouraged followers to place their preorder, promising them that “the wait is almost over.” This was joined by an image that looks nothing like the one of the T1 phone that’s currently on the Trump Mobile website. It instead looks rather suspiciously like the rear side of a Samsung Galaxy S25.

Not just that, it actually appears to be the back of a third-party S25 phone case from Spigen that has been Photoshopped gold and stamped with the T1 logo and trademark American flag. Still visible, just behind the flag, is the Spigen company logo.

Spigen’s social media account commented under the post on X with an apt “??? bro what,” before writing on its own page that it had a “lawsuit incoming.” WIRED has reached out to Spigen for comment.

This isn’t the first time that questions as to what the T1 Phone will actually turn out to be have been raised. Not long after it was announced in June, the specs of the phone changed on the Trump Mobile website, along with deleting claims that it would be made in the USA.

Currently, the Trump Mobile website claims the T1 Phone will have a 6.2-inch punch-hole AMOLED screen with 120 Hz refresh rate, 50 MP main camera with a 16 MP selfie camera, and a 5,000 mAh battery. There’s also 256 GB of internal storage, an in-screen fingerprint sensor and “AI face unlock.”

It’s priced at $499, which includes a $100 deposit that apparently covers shipping and handling as well as your first month of Trump Mobile service. This suggests buyers will be required to use Trump Mobile with their T1 Phone, with no clear details before you authorize payment of any ongoing commitment to the service.

Users can, at least, wait to receive the phone before activating the service, and can request a full refund “at any time prior to the shipment of the phone.”

As to what the phone will look like when (and if) that ever happens though, it’s currently impossible to know—and Trump Mobile seems as unsure as the rest of us. All of which isn’t helping to curb suspicions that, right now, the T1 Phone—initially pegged to arrive in August—probably doesn’t exist in any shape or form.

HoYoverse has delivered some more fresh gamescom week news – and no, it’s not the big Genshin Impact update we covered yesterday. This time, it’s all about Zenless Zone Zero, which itself is preparing for its next major update.

The big Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night chapter, otherwise known as Version 2.2, has a release date and everything.

ZZZ’s version 2.2 arrives September 4 across all platforms. The narrative is set after the Defence Force dealt with the Exaltists’ conspiracy, and stars Seed and Orphie & Magus from the Defense Force’s Obol Squad. They’ve been dispatched to investigate the power struggles in New Eridu.

Part of their mission is to eliminate any remaining Exaltists, but there’s a bit of a mystery surrounding Obol Squad itself that they’re going to uncover, shedding light on its past.

Newcomer Seed is an S-Rank Electric Attack Agent, who, together with the Seed Sr. mecha, offer big combat bonuses. Seed is made to work well with other Attack Agents, mainly because they can boost the sustained damage output of the squad. Orphie & Magus is another S-Rank Attack Agent, except with a Fire elemental speciality.

As the squad’s captain, they work well as assist. Orphie is able to gather Bottled Heat, and get all squad members in a Zeroed-in state each time enemies are hit. This boosts attack damage, and even allows Aftershocks to go through a portion of enemy defences.

Mercury is another new arrival, an S-Rank Bangboo who supports the squad from inside the tank that they drive. Returning Agents for this update will be Trigger (S-Rank Electric Stun) and Evelyn (S-Rank Fire Attack).

HoYoverse also teased the return of Soldier 0 – Anby, who’ll be arriving back in the game at some point soon, once she’s done with her training.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a new update without in-game events. Band of Brave Bangboo, the Bangboo tower defence event, is getting new maps, enemies, and mechanics, and a free A-Rank Excaliboo once you’ve cleared enough stages. There’s also the more chill Rhythm Rave event, which as you might expect is a bit of a rhythm minigame.

Finally, you can expect some general quality of life tweaks and other optimisation. For example: you’ll now be able to pick between Belle and Wise before starting companion events, such as Quality Time. A happy day for whichever sibling was being denied a social life in your game until now!

Ensemble’s march in the AI agents space includes a decentralized finance alert with tiered subscriptions that users can pay for directly in chat. The protocol is also looking at a DeFi analyst agent expected to bring features such as on-demand analysis, quotes and pay per query to users. 

Users will be able to request and receive results within the same XMTP thread.

The platform also eyes AI agents for far more complex workflows, such as queries on optimizing yield farming.

‘Silksong lol’: CloverPit devs delay the slot machine Balatro-like by 23 days to escape the blast radius of Silksong’s launch

You know what they say: The best laid plans of mice and men sometimes get abruptly derailed by a surprise launch announcement. Thanks to yesterday’s reveal that Silksong’s release date is only two weeks away, CloverPit developer Panik Arcade has decided to push back the launch of the slot machine roguelite to dodge the all-consuming attention singularity that we can safely expect the Hollow Knight sequel to be.

Panik Arcade announced the change of plans in a Steam news post titled “We have to delay CloverPit a bit (Silksong lol)!” Rather than its original release date of September 3, CloverPit will now launch on September 26.

“Silksong is the most anticipated and wishlisted game on all of Steam and we think people will love this game and play it right at launch (including us) but that also means it will overshadow all games launching close to it,” Panik Arcade said. “So if we stick to our original date we would risk the launch of CloverPit a fair bit.”

My sympathies go out to any devteam that’s had to reevaluate their launch plans after unknowingly choosing a release date within the Silksong gravity well, but CloverPit’s case is particularly tragic: Its original release date was announced just nine days ago. It had a delightful trailer to go along with it and everything. Luckily, Panik Arcade seems to be taking it in stride.

“We poured our hearts into our little game so of course we want to give it the best possible shot,” Panik Arcade said. “We hope you can understand—we’ll use the extra time of course to polish the game even further and we hope for your support at launch either way.”

After playing the CloverPit demo, I’m eager to get my hands on the full version whether it launches in 12 days or 35. It’s got that Balatro-style multiplier-stacking juice, a magnificently grody aesthetic, and an understanding that gambling is the enterprise of hungry, uncaring devils. Plus, it makes fun lights when you win! If it means CloverPit gets a better shot at its time in the spotlight, I’m content with a slightly longer wait.

CloverPit launches on Steam on September 26. Hopefully we’ll all have recovered from the collective Silksong mania by then.

At Gamescom, it felt like the industry now has a plan: make games quicker | Opinion

Up in the enormous halls of the northern half of Koelnmesse, the crowds are still being wowed by glitzy stands and demos of the latest games, not least the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong.

But in the southern half, the business-only section of the show is drawing to a close. And having spent the past four days dashing between appointments with CEOs and developers, there is one sentiment that has remained consistent among almost everyone I spoke to.

We need to make games quicker.

It’s refreshing to hear. After months and months of gloom and panic across the industry, as layoff announcements arrive as regularly as bad-news buses, it feels as if everyone has finally centred on a plan.

Shorter development times will of course mean lower costs

It’s a simple one. Rather than spending half a decade or more working endlessly on one title, the idea is to instead make games in one or two years, maybe three at max. And if they’re not quite polished enough for a full release by then, they can be popped into early access instead.

By far the biggest expense when making games is salaries, so shorter development times will of course mean lower costs – in theory. And that means not betting the farm on every single release.

If a game that’s been in development for two years fails to land at launch, it’s still a big blow. But it’s nothing like the existential crisis of launching a flop that’s been in the works for five, six, seven years.

There’s the advantage, too, that quickly made games can be adapted to suit current trends, avoiding the pain of, say, launching a live-service shooter years after the genre has been saturated.

Almost everyone at Gamescom thought games need to be made more quickly

Of course, it’s one thing to say you want to make games more quickly, and quite another to actually do it. More to the point, how do you do it?

One option is to make games that look worse. Given how super-detailed graphics seem to be far less important to a younger generation raised on Roblox and Minecraft, this would seem like a fair enough strategy.

Why bother spending days, weeks, or even months modelling super-realistic satsumas when your audience would be satisfied with a crude orange daub?

Yet there seemed to be little appetite for this strategy among the people I spoke to at Gamescom. Perhaps it’s an unwillingness to fly in the face of conventional wisdom in an industry where frame rates are often fetishised. Perhaps it’s more about simple pride in the craft.

So what’s the alternative? One option is to use AI to speed up the development process. And it’s an option that more and more studios are taking up.

AI is the games industry’s dirty little open secret – the majority of people I spoke to said they were using AI in some form or another.

Very few were employing AI to generate finished assets for a game, the kind that gets you that shameful little ‘AI Content’ label on Steam. But many were using it at some point in the development process.

Utilising AI to generate snippets of code was a popular choice. In addition, a fair few people are using AI to generate concept art early in the process, letting them quickly iterate ideas.

Everyone was adamant that AI should be used as a helper tool, rather than as a replacement for human skills.

Some people were quite open about the use of AI in their games. Others were far more coy, going rigid when the dreaded word came up, as if worried their secret might come out.

They have reason to be afraid. The outrage caused by a snippet of AI-generated text being found in The Alters – along with the more serious problem of poorly AI-localised text – is one example of why developers are wary of talking openly about AI.

Yet the fact is that AI is already in widespread use across the games industry – and it seems absurd for developers to live in fear forever. What’s needed is an open discussion of how AI should be best used. What’s needed are agreed best-practice guidelines.

For example, should AI-generated art be off-limits in finished games? Or is it fine as long as the data set is trained on assets wholly owned by the studio? These are the kinds of questions that need to be discussed.

The next few years will entail a process of collectively deciding how to proceed. But love it or hate it, it’s quite clear that AI isn’t going away any time soon.

Whether AI actually enables games to be made more quickly, however, remains to be seen. I have my doubts – the temptation with effort-saving technology like this is always to do more, rather than do it quicker.

Maybe the goal of making games faster will take a while to achieve, and might well require a change in thinking. But at least everyone has agreed on a plan.

The consensus view suggests Powell will adhere to the Fed’s script of data dependency, refusing to pre-commit to a course of action for the September meeting.

 “There are two key questions to answer. One, is the labor market still solid? Two, is inflation accelerating, and are we seeing an impact from tariffs that is causing inflation to accelerate that could interrupt this likely Fed rate cut [in September]?” Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director at US Bank Asset Management Group, told CNN on Friday

This puts the Fed, and Powell personally, in a nearly impossible bind. The political pressure for rate cuts is palpable, yet premature easing could validate fears of entrenched inflation, a scenario deeply negative for risk assets like crypto. Conversely, overly hawkish rhetoric could stifle the economy and undermine the soft landing many are hoping for.

Last week, Activision Blizzard’s Story and Franchise Development team (SFD) announced to the world it had unionised alongside the Communications Workers of America (CWA). As of writing, a neutrality agreement is in place while negotiations for a union contract are in the works.

It is not the first time the push for unionisation has surged at Activision Blizzard. Three months ago the Overwatch team unionised, 500 staff from the World of Warcraft team unionised last year, and Raven Software recently ratified its first union contract.

But as yet another wave of layoffs have been made at the company as part of Microsoft’s massive cuts across its gaming studios, this push for employee representation appears more necessary than ever.

To find out more about this next stage in Blizzard’s unionisation efforts, as well as what those at the SFD department want, I talked to two recently unionised Blizzard employees about what’s next for the team going forward.

“The industry has had a lot of instability over the last few years, studios have been hit with layoffs, closures, game cancellations. I feel like it’s the most profitable entertainment sector in the world, and the people who work in it should have a piece of that and some stability to their working conditions.”

That was Alison Venato, video editor on the SFD team and one of many people responsible for Activision Blizzard’s incredibly popular cinematics across Overwatch and Diablo. The team and her have found themselves at the centre of a seemingly ever-shifting company in recent years, where it has proven hard to find stability.

“There’s been a lot of leadership changes over the past few years,” states Veneto, “and we feel like getting a union contract will give us some stability no matter what shake-ups happen at the company. We’ve had others that have unionised on the Warcraft and Overwatch teams, and we’ve had a wave of layoffs hit us since the Microsoft acquisition.

“We understand companies need to make money, but we were bought in the largest tech acquisition of all time, so obviously we have value. Our union can work with the leadership to create a situation that’s beneficial to everyone.”

Sammi Kay, associate producer at Blizzard SFD, shares Venato’s desire to protect the developer’s ability to create the excellent work, without fear of reprisal from an industry disconnected from the realities of modern day video game development

“The industry has been expanding quite rapidly, especially since the pandemic when everyone was playing video games – myself included,” she said. “There’s a disconnect between what the companies and leadership are expecting from the industry and the workers who are developing that content.”

Kay elaborates on the feeling of the developers on the ground at Blizzard: “Everyone at Blizzard who has had a long tenure here enjoys the team, and there’s this sentiment that Blizzard is a special place. Things have changed due to many factors, including the pandemic, and the age of Blizzard as a company and it evolving, including with the acquisition by Microsoft. We’re unionising because we’re attached to how special Blizzard is […] We want to protect what we have and make it better.”

So what do the folks at the SFD department want? Many concerns shared by those recently unionised at Blizzard are similar to those expressed elsewhere in the industry. Namely the issues of pay, AI regulation, and layoff protections.

“Everyone is talking about the same issues,” expressed Veneto. “Pay is always an issue – we live in Irvine which is always expensive. Layoff protections are important given the waves of layoffs [we’ve seen]. Work from home policies are very important to people, and AI obviously is having a huge impact. Plus, we’ve had things that were outsourced that we’d rather have in-house.

Then there’s the “big issue” of transparency, a key demand for those who feel ambushed by years of sudden changes. “A lot of decisions are made about pay and promotions that we have no insight into. So just having some more information there is key. For me and other people in SFD we’re all doing creative work, and a lot of these problems make it hard to be creative. A more stable environment where we have a contract that allows us to do this would be great […] I want to work with the best people on the best work.”

As for Kay, while they are hesitant to speak on behalf of the whole department, AI regulation and pay are at the top of their list: “For me I would hope for better pay rises that keep pace or ahead of inflation,” they said. “More considerations with the use of AI, what that means as a tool for us at SFD and its implications moving forward. I think there’s very specific discussions on that for those in SFD in particular that should happen. I think it would be prudent to negotiate what layoff protections look like as well as severance packages.”

However, given Kay’s background in film and TV prior to Blizzard, they’re keen to avoid the temp-worker-focused dynamic found in other entertainment industries. “Having gone from contract work to full time was wonderful, and I want that opportunity to be available for more people,” they said. “From discussions I’ve had, there’s movement towards more contract roles being the norm, and that’s not in the best interest of Blizzard and its employees.”

Ultimately it’s a big win for the SFD team, and another blow landed in the ongoing fight for unionisation in the video game industry. With layoffs and closures happening at an alarming rate, one can only hope negotiations go well for all involved.

So how good a shot does the SFD department have at getting what they want, and what’s the deal with what certainly feels like a growing push for unionisation in the video game industry? To find more, I spoke to Scott Alsworth from the UK’s IWGB Union.

He credits the increase in unionisation efforts to several factors: technological displacement (especially poignant with the push for AI), a greater number of working class people joining the video game industry who bring a greater awareness of unionisation, and a response to the state of the industry as a whole.

“People are angry,” said Alsworth “The feeling in the industry is one of frustration. The biggest factor to the growth in unionisation is a widespread response to mass layoffs across the industry. Everybody knows someone who has been impacted, and people see unions as insurance and a way to help them keep their job, or at least a way to get extra help if they’re made redundant.

“It’s a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy,” he continued “Once unions are there people start joining and you gain momentum. When I’m talking to people about joining a union there are two reasons: the first a basic self preservation, what a union can do for me. The second is a desire to see the industry change, not just for themselves, but for workers everywhere.”

So what sort of protections can be gained? It depends on whether or not the union is recognised by the company in question. But even before any new contract is signed, the SFD department forming a union provides valuable resources.

“In the case of a large-scale layoff, what we can do is make sure the studio is doing things by the book,” said Alsworth “You’d be surprised how many studios cut corners and don’t do things like they’re supposed to do. At IWGB we have a great legal team, and that’s a great resource for us. I can safely say that in a number of cases, things like labour laws haven’t been adhered to. Once we raise that with our legal team, the studio gets spooked and you start to see concessions.”

Then of course as a collective the union has have options like strike action which becomes feasible to organise while unionised, better access to information and council in regard to contracts and an individual’s rights as a worker, and so on. Even as negotiations are in their early stages, the Blizzard SFD department has gained a few tools for its tool belt.

So the decision to unionise is a great first step for those at Activision Blizzard seeking better working conditions. Getting a proper contract in place, getting recognition from the company and solidifying a place within the legendary developer will surely be a hard and arduous process. But it’s a process many are eager to engage in, especially at a time when instability is becoming the norm in an industry gaining a reputation for its troubled nature.
