Anonymous Hacktivist Group Founder Spearheads Meme Coin While Facing 5 Years in Prison

by admin August 23, 2025

In brief

  • Aubrey Cottle, better known as Kirtaner online, is spearheading a Solana “movement coin” as a homage to Anonymous, a famous hacker group which he founded.
  • Fees earned by the token will be used to fund Cottle’s ongoing legal battle, buy tokens for Anonymous OGs, and potentially create a scholarship fund for young hackers.
  • Cottle faces five years in prison for his alleged connection to a 2021 data breach of the Republican Party of Texas.

“We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.”

The motto of notorious hacktivist group Anonymous has heralded some of the world’s most famous hacks, targeting everyone from the Westboro Baptist Church to Bank of America.

Now, one of its founding members is spearheading a Solana-based crypto project, which he brands as a “movement coin” rather than a traditional meme coin. The token is a homage to hacktivist culture, a way to help fund his ongoing legal battle, and a vehicle for the Anonymous movement to evolve.

Aubrey Cottle, more commonly known as Kirtaner or just Kirt online, told Decrypt that he was the founder of Anonymous, and has been widely reported as one of the founding members. Cottle faces up to five years in prison after the U.S. Department of Justice charged the Canadian in March for his alleged connection to a 2021 data breach of the Republican Party of Texas.

This prompted an unknown crypto degen to create ANON, a Solana token on the Bags launchpad, assigning fees associated with it to Cottle. The Canadian embraced the ANON token, which has climbed to a market cap of $8 million since its creation on August 15, generating more than $59,000 in fees for Cottle in the process.

The hacktivist founder told Decrypt that the fees, in part, will be used to fund his legal battle and ensure his family is financially sound “if the worst happens.” On top of this, Cottle said, he is buying back the ANON token and setting aside chunks of supply for the original Anonymous members.

“I want every single one of us to make it, all of our old heroes,” Cottle told Decrypt. “People who put their lives on the line, people who sacrificed, people who were hunted down by the feds, people who were scared for their lives, ended up with years and years of trauma from times long past that. Making everybody feel as if it wasn’t just something that we dumped half of our lives into and came out the other end just completely fucked up with nothing to show for it.”

What is Anonymous?

Anonymous is a decentralized, international hacktivist group, often visually represented by a Guy Fawkes mask inspired by the novel and film “V for Vendetta.” The group is known for a series of high-profile attacks on major corporations and governments that Anonymous deemed guilty of wrongdoing.

In 2010, the group performed DDoS attacks on PayPal, Visa, and MasterCard after they blocked donations to WikiLeaks; it also declared a cyber war against Russia following the nation’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

“Hacktivism is the only axis of power accessible to the disenfranchised that can still strike at scale; it’s a pressure valve that’s needed in society,” Cottle told Decrypt. “It is the only way that we can actively push back against hostile state and corporate powers.”

of the Anonymous collective, we can in fact report the truths of Anonymous’ collective actions against the Russian Federation. We want the Russian people to understand that we know it’s hard for them to speak out against their dictator for fear of reprisals. (cont)

— Anonymous (@YourAnonNews) February 24, 2022

The token’s community has embraced Anonymous culture to its core, not seeing ANON as a meme coin but rather a tokenized extension of the original hacktivist movement. One investor told Decrypt that the goal is to “push a rebellion” against institutions crippling everyday people.

The group has adopted phrases associated with Anonymous, including its iconic motto, as well as adapting slogans from meme coin culture. “The hat stays on,” associated with the Dogwifhat meme coin community, has become “The mask stays on” in a nod to the Guy Fawkes mask.

ANON investor Tx_Dak dubbed the token “the first real movement coin on Solana.” Speaking to Decrypt, they touted Cottle’s credentials as the “actual founder” of the “biggest decentralized movement in the world,” who has made the token his “legacy project.” They added that, “This isn’t even a coin. It’s a tokenized version of the movement itself that shaped internet history forever. And now it’s going to shape the blockchain forever.”

Inspiring a new generation of hacktivists

While the token’s surge in value helped revitalize Anonymous’ memetic value—which peaked in 2012 and 2020, per Google Trends—it may also help kick-start the next generation of hacktivists.

ANON will eventually become a “self-organizing machine, just like Anonymous is,” Cottle told Decrypt. “Once it gets to a certain point, there are initiatives that I want to do. I want to create a scholarship fund for young, talented hackers, so they can do things like get key certifications and blossom in their careers. I want to be able to put together initiatives, such as legal defense funding pools behind a nonprofit for hacktivists.”

Cottle clarified that by “careers,” he doesn’t necessarily mean specifically in hacking; he just wants to help kids who were like him flourish. He also said that the plan is some way off, estimating that to make good on it, ANON would have to hit a $200 million market capitalization—more than a 2,400% price increase from its current value.

“I’m not setting up a radicalization school,” Cottle said with a laugh. “This is an effort of pure goodwill and trying to lift other people up.”

Interpol Arrests 1,209 Involved In Illegal Crypto Mining And Investment Scams

by admin August 23, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has successfully conducted a continent-wide cybercrime crackdown in Africa, targeted against illegal cryptocurrency mining operations, inheritance scams, and fraudulent investments. Coordinated under the code name Serengeti 2.0, the three-month operation ran from June to August 2025, leading to more than 1,200 arrests and the recovery of close to $100 million in stolen funds and confiscated assets.

Operation Serengeti 2.0

According to Interpol’s press release on August 22, investigators from 18 African countries, working alongside the United Kingdom and supported by private-sector partners, dismantled 11,432 malicious infrastructures linked to almost 88,000 victims  of targeted high-impact online crimes, including ransomware, scams, and business email compromise (BEC).

Notably, law enforcement authorities in Angola shut down 25 illegal cryptocurrency mining sites operated by 60 Chinese nationals while also commandeering 45 unauthorized power stations feeding these operations. In addition, officers also confiscated IT and mining machinery worth over $37 million.

Meanwhile, in Zambia, officials uncovered a massive crypto investment fraud with 65,000 victims and $300 million in total losses. The operation led to 15 arrests, alongside the seizure of domains, SIM cards, and bank accounts tied to the scam, which had promised investors sizable returns. Notably, another sting in Lusaka disrupted a suspected human-trafficking network, where 372 forged passports of seven countries were confiscated.

Interpol also reports that the Ivorian police dismantled a cross-border inheritance scam believed to originate in Germany. Unsuspecting victims were deceived to pay fees for fake inheritance claims, generating around $1.6 million in illicit gains. The primary suspect in this case has been detained while authorities seized cash, jewelry, and vehicles, among other valuables.

Commenting on the successful Serengeti 2.0 operation, Interpol’s Secretary General, Valdecy Urquiza, emphasized the importance of cooperation in amplifying results:

Urquiza said:

Each INTERPOL-coordinated operation builds on the last, deepening cooperation, increasing information sharing, and developing investigative skills across member countries. With more contributions and shared expertise, the results keep growing in scale and impact

Operation Serengeti 2.0 was conducted under the African Joint Operation Against Cybercrime with other participating nations, including Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, etc. Meanwhile, private partners of this operation are TRM Labs, Trend Micro, and Team Cypru, among others.

Bose’s compact TV Speaker is more than $100 off right now

by admin August 23, 2025

If you’re looking to upgrade your movie night, a soundbar is an easy way to beef up the audio. While there are some high-priced options out there, you don’t have to spend a lot to actually hear a movie’s dialog. Right now, the Bose TV Speaker is down to $163.45 (about $115 off) at Amazon, the lowest price we’ve seen yet.

The Bose TV Speaker is a solid starter soundbar that can easily integrate into existing setups with a simple one-cable connection (via optical or HDMI). At under 24 inches wide and around two inches tall, the soundbar features a small footprint, yet it delivers a rich, immersive sound thanks to its three-speaker setup. For more bass, you can press the “Bass” button on the remote, while a dedicated dialogue mode further elevates what people are saying, allowing you to finally turn off the subtitles.

Additionally, the Bose TV Speaker has Bluetooth connectivity, so you can use the soundbar to listen to music or podcasts. While it lacks more premium features like Dolby Atmos, Bose offers some of our favorite noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds, so you can expect a similar level of quality in its home audio products.

Spot XRP ETF Coming Soon? Asset Managers Submit Amended S-1 Filings

by admin August 23, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

According to the latest report, a group of asset management firms submitted S-1 amendments for a spot XRP ETF (exchange-traded fund) in the United States. These movements reflect the ramped-up interest of these institutions to get the approval of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to offer this crypto-linked investment product.

What Changed In The Proposed Spot XRP ETFs?

On Friday, August 22, a slew of asset managers, including Grayscale, Bitwise, Canary, CoinShares, Franklin Templeton, 21Shares, and WisdomTree, filed amended S-1 statements for their proposed spot XRP ETFs. According to experts, this round of filings might be in response to the US SEC’s feedback on their original applications.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart said on X:

Bunch of XRP ETF filings being updated by issuers today. Almost certainly due to feedback from [the] SEC. Good sign, but also mostly expected.

Similarly, the ETF Store President, Nate Geraci, shared a similar sentiment, saying that it is very significant to see the various asset managers roll out their amended S-1 filings at once and on the same day. “Very good sign IMO [in my opinion],” Geraci wrote on X.

Source: @JSeyff on X

For a security or ETF to be listed on an exchange, it needs an S-1 filing, which provides a brief prospectus of the proposed security. Meanwhile, the S-1 form is amended as material information changes regarding the structure of the exchange-traded fund.

Hence, it is no surprise to see some changes in the structure of proposed spot XRP ETFs. For instance, the amended S-1 filing appears to switch the exchange-traded products from simply cash creations and redemptions to allow for XRP or cash creations and cash or in-kind redemptions.

It is worth mentioning that BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management firm and manager of the largest spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded fund, has still not made a move to join the race for the spot XRP ETFs. As reported by Bitcoinist, the trillion-dollar asset manager revealed earlier in August that it has no intentions to launch an XRP fund.

XRP Price At A Glance

Following a torrid start to the week, the XRP token fell beneath the $3 mark to as low as $2.8 on Friday. However, the altcoin jumped back above $3 on the back of the news of the complete dismissal of Ripple’s lawsuit and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s speech. As of this writing, the XRP token is valued at around $3.01, reflecting an over 5% price jump in the past 24 hours.

Best GoPro Camera (2025): Compact, Budget, Accessories

by admin August 23, 2025

The Top 3 GoPro Hero Cameras Compared

GoPros to Avoid

GoPro doesn’t sell anything older than the Hero 12, but there are plenty of Hero 11s and even Hero 10s out there for sale on the internet. We suggest avoiding them. They may work fine, but modern accessories designed for later models won’t work, and these cameras have likely been through the wringer. (They are action cameras, after all.)

GoPro

Hero 11 Black

GoPro no longer sells the Hero 11, but it’s still commonly available on Amazon and other retailers. Unfortunately it’s usually the same price as the Hero 12 (around $300) and therefore not worth buying.

GoPro

Hero 10 Black

The Hero 10 is really showing its age at this point, but it can sometimes be found on sale for $200, but the video quality and stabilization aren’t nearly as good as the Hero 13, which also sells for about $220 and is better in every way.

What About the GoPro Max?

Photograph: GoPro

What most people call a “GoPro” is in fact the Hero Black camera. GoPro makes a few other cameras as well, most notably the Max. The Max is GoPro’s attempt at three cameras in one. It can shoot 360 footage and Hero-style video and photos, and it works as a vlogging camera. While the 360-degree time lapse feature is awesome, and the sound is pretty good, it’s been a while since GoPro updated it, and there are better 360 cameras. Our top pick is Insta360’s X5. The GoPro Max might be more durable, but in nearly every other way the X5 bests it. Hopefully, GoPro will update the Max in 2025.

The Best GoPro Accessories

Photograph: GoPro

Should you buy a bundle? Generally, I say no. Get the camera, figure it out, and see how you end up using it. When you find yourself trying to solve a problem, start looking for an accessory. Here are some of my favorite things that I’ve tested and used, but if you have favorites you think I should try, drop a comment below.

A good MicroSD card for $60: According to GoPro’s recommendations, you want a microSD card with a V30 or UHS-3 rating. That said, GoPros can be finicky about SD cards. I’ve had good luck with, and recommend, the Samsung linked here. Another card I’ve used extensively is the Sandisk Extreme Pro.

GoPro Media Mod for $80: By far my most used accessory, the media mod does add some bulk, but in most cases this is more than made up for by the fact that you can plug in a real microphone (I use mine with a Rode Wireless). Sound quality is radically improved with this one. This may be less necessary if you get the Hero 12 or later, since those models do have support for Bluetooth mics.

GoPro Handlebar Mount for $40: I’ve been doing a lot more riding lately and this mount pretty much lives on my bike these days. It’s been rock solid in my testing, and beats any of the third-party mounts I’ve tested.

GoPro Tripod Mount Adapters for $30: Unless you have the Hero 12 or 13, which have a tripod mount built-in, you’ll need a few of these to mount your GoPro to a tripod like the GorillaPod above.

GoPro Floaty for $35: If you’re getting anywhere near the water, grab one of these. Trust me, you will drop your GoPro and when you do, you will glad you have this (unless the water is clear and you’re a good free diver.) GoPro also makes a Floating Hand Grip ($23), which not only floats but has a leash for diving or surfing.

GoPro Selfie Stick for $80: This 48-inch extension pole collapses up surprisingly small and isn’t very heavy. It’s the best selfie stick I’ve used. I rarely use it for selfies, but it makes a great monopod on soft ground, like a sandy beach.

DaVinci Resolve Studio for $300: This is my video editing software of choice. There is a free version, but I got tired of converting media to fit the restrictions of the free version. Best money I ever spent when it comes to making better videos.

Is Bitcoin’s 4-Year Cycle Over? Why BTC May Finally Break the Trend

by admin August 23, 2025

In brief

  • Bitcoin historically follows four-year cycles where it soars one year after its halving and then crashes in price.
  • Some experts say this cycle could be different, though.
  • This is because a new type of investor is now involved in buying the cryptocurrency via ETFs.

If history is anything to go by, then Bitcoin should plunge next year—and crypto markets will be in the red. But just because it’s happened before doesn’t mean it will happen again.

One of the hottest debates raging right now across the crypto industry is whether or not Bitcoin will stick to its usual four-year cycle. Experts have been chiming in from both sides of the spectrum, and Crypto X is rife with hot takes (as ever).

Last year, Bitcoin did something it hadn’t done before when it hit a new high ahead of the halving, following the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. This has led some analysts and observers to believe that Bitcoin’s typical cycle—when the coin hits a high the year after its halving, only to plunge by 70-80% the following year—is finished.

This guy gets it. We’ve been saying same thing. Since BlackRock filing Bitcoin is up like 250% with much less volatility and no vomit-inducing drawdowns. This has helped it attract even bigger fish and gives it fighting chance to be adopted as currency. Downside is prob no more… https://t.co/0ECd5XevcO

— Eric Balchunas (@EricBalchunas) July 26, 2025

“It’s just common sense,” Bloomberg Intelligence Senior ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas told Decrypt. “More stable owners, more stable price,” he added, referring to the ETF investors.

The approval of ETFs in January 2024 allowed millions of dollars in capital previously locked out of the markets to flood into the space. Months after they started trading, the leading cryptocurrency hit a new all-time high. The coin has since broken new highs off the back of crypto-friendly President Donald Trump’s victory, rising yet again to a fresh peak last week.

Investors in the space are now more sophisticated, too: Institutions from Harvard University and Goldman Sachs have bought Bitcoin—and via the ETFs, no less. Such investors are less likely to panic-sell, and are buying to hold for the long term, Balchunas said.

“I think the ETF kicked off this new phase, and I don’t know if the four year cycle would apply. I don’t want to say never, but again, you have to use common sense,” he said. “Volatility is based on the people who hold it.”

Bitcoin was recently trading for $115,492 per coin, up more than 2% over the past day and by 22% year-to-date, according to CoinGecko. It broke a new record of $124,128 on August 14.

In the previous bull run, Bitcoin peaked at a high of $69,044 in November 2021. But the hype didn’t last and a brutal correction occurred, leading Bitcoin to crash below $16,000 in November 2022 after a long list of crypto companies went bankrupt following the collapse of Terra—most notably the prominent digital asset exchange, FTX.

Bitcoin is now much more mature, however, and further integrated into traditional markets, noted André Dragosch, Bitwise’s Europe head of research.

“Our thesis is that macro- and demand-related factors are definitely becoming increasingly more important due to Bitcoin’s increasing integration into the global financial system,” he said.

Dragosch added that the performance effect from the halving—which occurs approximately every four years and slashes the BTC rewards earned by network-supporting miners—has been declining, while demand-related factors are becoming increasingly important.

But not all experts agree. A report by CoinGlass this week used data to point out that this year is looking increasingly like previous cycles—especially in terms of price action.

The report said that the flagship coin’s price movements are echoing what was seen in the cycles of 2015-2018 and 2018–2022, and that capital inflows into the asset are “showing signs of fatigue.”

“Alongside this, long-term holders have realized profit levels comparable to past euphoric phases, reinforcing the impression of a market late in its cycle,” the report read.

But it’s worth noting that every cycle, there are quirks—and HODLers will ultimately have to wait to see how things play out.

“Every time that we think, ‘This time it’s different,’ it seems that the market corrects us and shows us: ‘Nope, this time it’s exactly the same,'” Nick Hansen, CEO of Bitcoin mining firm Luxor, told Decrypt.

HALF-TIME ACROSS THE BOARD

(Image credit: Getty Images- Matt McNulty)

Bournemouth 1-0 Wolves: The home side dominated the early parts of the game, grabbing the lead through Tavernier early on. Wolves managed to regain a bit of grip in midfield after about 30 minutes and created a few chances from wide. Both teams go in knowing the game is still up for grabs.

Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa: Perhaps against most people’s predictions for this one, it’s the home side who go in on top at half time. Debutant Ouattara scored for the Bee’s as they also had a late goal in the half ruled out for a foul in the build up. Unai Emery will have to rally his team up at half time if he wants to leave with some points.

Burnley 0-0 Sunderland: It’s stalemate at Turf Moor going into half-time. The hosts had a goal ruled out after VAR review in the 18th minute but the game has been very close in the first half, both teams having three shots each as they share possession 49% to 51%. All is still to play for.

All three games have witnessed an enforced change as Sunderland’s Daniel Ballard came off for Jenson Seelt, Aston Villa’s Boubacar Kamara came off for Emi Buendia and Wolves’ Ki-Jana Hoever came off for debutant Jackson Tchatchoua.

Expect a big second half across all three games as they’re all still wide open and don’t forget that if you’re travelling away from home you can use a VPN to access your usual coverage.

A unnecessary card to receive really. Adingra goes into the book after slapping Mejbri in the face.

2025-08-23T14:21:42.461Z

Another early substitution 16′

There’s another early substitution in this afternoon’s fixtures but this time it’s Aston Villa who are forced to make a change. Kamara comes off for Villa for Buendia who will presumably play in attacking midfield with Tielemens dropping into the midfield pivot.

BRENTFORD TAKE THE LEAD! 12′

Match Preview: Burnley vs Sunderland

(Image credit: Getty Images- Lewis Storey)

Two of the newly promoted teams face off early on in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign in what’s set to be a thriller.

Scott Parker’s Burnley host The Black Cats at Turf Moor after The Clarets were thumped 3-0 by Tottenham in gameweek 1, although the game was closer than the score suggests. Last year in the Championship, Burnley held an impressive defensive record, only conceding 18 goals in 48 matches. However, a crucial piece in that puzzle was goalkeeper James Trafford who departed for his boyhood club Manchester City this summer.

On the bright side, Burnley are unbeaten in their three Premier League home games against Sunderland, most recently a 4-1 victory in December 2018.

Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland enjoyed a marvellous return to the Premier League, beating West Ham 3-0 with goals from Mayenda, Ballard and Isidor. The Black Cats will be looking to pounce at the chance to extend their winning form against a dejected Burnley team.

After a summer spending spree, new boys Sunderland racked up a transfer bill of over £132 million and will be confident that their new new look side has the tools to dismantle Burnley.

Match Preview: Brentford vs Aston Villa

(Image credit: Getty Images- Harry Murphy)

The Bee’s started their 2025-26 EPL campaign with a disappointing 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest, with a consolation goal from striker Igor Thiago from the penalty spot. The departure of key players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard as well as manager Thomas Frank has proven to be difficult to deal with for Brentford. With ace, Yoane Wissa, also looking likely to depart for greener pastures, Brentford look on course for a difficult season under rookie manager Keith Andrews.

However, Andrew’s men will be looking for a positive result in front of their home fans for the first time this season, looking to overcome their six game winless streak against Villa in the League.

Unai Emery’s men come into this game after a stalemate vs Newcastle in their league opener. The lack of shots the Villans produced against Newcastle could be cause for concern for Emery but they have won in their last two visits to the Gtech and have scored in all eight of their Premier League meetings.

The big news is that goalkeeper Emi Martinez returns to the starting XI for Villa. However they are without Ezri Konsa as he’s suspended following a red card against Newcastle. Emery will have to adjust his defensive set up going into this battle, with both Mings and Torres looking to start at CB as they look to add to their impressive against a struggling Brentford.

Match Preview: Bournemouth vs Wolves

(Image credit: Getty Images- Michael Steele)

Andori Iraola’s Bournemouth welcome Vitor Pereria’s Wolves to the Vitality stadium for this Premier League clash. Bournemouth showed a good account of themselves against Premier League champions, Liverpool, in gameweek 1 of the 2025-26 EPL season, losing 4-2 in an end-to-end thriller.

Riddled with summer departures, with key players such as Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi leaving for Real Madrid and PSG respectively and Milos Kerkez joining Liverpool, it’s more or less a new look back line for the Cherries as they’ll look to get their first three points of the season.

However, Bournemouth have managed to keep hold of star player, Antoine Semenyo, who dazzled against Liverpool. Bournemouth fans will be hoping the Ghanaian can lead them to victory against Wolves, who they have beaten three times in their last five Premier League meetings.

A similar summer of goodbyes took place in Wolverhampton as well, as Vitor Pereira lost talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United and left back Rayan Ait-Nouri to their Manchester rivals, the Citizens.

Wolves’ start to the 2025-26 Premier League campaign was one to forget as Ait-Nouri came back to haunt his former club as Manchester City shipped four passed Wolves with no reply. Pereira will be looking for a big response from his team as they look to bounce back from a harrowing opening day defeat. Wolves are unbeaten in five games at the Vitality stadium which should put them in good stead going into this game but their defensive fragilities shown in gameweek 1 may come to blossom once again if they can’t handle the pace of Bournemouth’s front line.

The Creators of an Ethereum Gaming Network Just Sued Elon Musk’s xAI

by admin August 23, 2025

In brief

  • Ex Populus, creator of the Xai gaming blockchain, is suing Elon Musk’s xAI for trademark infringement, and asking a court to block its use of the “xAI” name in gaming and blockchain.
  • The company says Musk’s expansion of xAI into gaming caused confusion with media, users, and even X’s own AI chatbot Grok, which mistakenly linked the two ventures.
  • Ex Populus argues Musk’s controversies, including Grok’s past offensive remarks, have severely damaged its brand.

The creators of Xai, a layer-3 gaming blockchain built on Ethereum, have sued Elon Musk’s xAI for trademark infringement—and are asking a federal court to force the billionaire’s artificial intelligence company to change its name and branding in contexts related to video games and blockchain.

In November, Musk announced plans to start an AI video game studio within xAI, to “make games great again.” Ex Populus, the company behind gaming blockchain Xai, now claims that Musk’s announcement immediately created “substantial actual confusion” online between their established video game brand, Xai, and Musk’s xAI gaming venture.

Numerous news aggregators and commentators used the blockchain’s logo in announcements about Musk’s venture, the company’s attorneys claim, and many more internet users mistook the separate ventures to be related. What’s more, Grok—Musk’s AI chatbot—also confused the two separate entities, and told X users they were both controlled by Musk’s companies, the attorneys said.

In a complaint filed Thursday, Ex Populus asked a federal court in northern California to order Musk’s AI company to cease using any words or symbols likely to cause confusion with Xai’s registered trademark, in the contexts of video gaming and blockchain.

It also requested punitive damages and all profits reaped by Musk’s companies for the alleged infringement.

Ex Populus’ attorneys repeatedly argued in their complaint that Musk’s company has not only consistently infringed on their copyright since last year—but, further, that the particular notoriety and controversy associated with the world’s richest man have made the alleged infringement particularly damaging to their brand.

Ex Populus took legal action today to protect the Xai brand. With increased confusion around Elon Musk’s AI company (@xai), it’s a big responsibility to safeguard the brand that the community trusts. You can read more details at https://t.co/ce8Aw9hNCZ

— XAI 🎮⛓️ (@XAI_GAMES) August 22, 2025

“Musk and defendants’ xAI company routinely receive substantive negative media attention that is now being attributed to plaintiff’s XAI trademark,” the attorneys wrote.

The lawyers made particular note of a controversy that erupted last month when Musk’s AI bot, Grok, referred to itself as “MechaHitler” for a brief period and made antisemitic, racist, and sexually violent comments across the X platform.

“Plaintiff losing control over its goodwill is irreparable harm sufficient to support an injunction to cease defendants’ use of the infringing xAI marks,” Ex Populus’ attorneys said, “but to be associated with Nazism, hate speech, and violence exacerbates the harm exponentially.”

Ex Populus said in a statement that Musk’s attorneys reached out to them recently about trademark issues, and that, now, the company feels it has no option but to fight back “or risk losing [the trademark] altogether.”

“This case isn’t just about Ex Populus or Xai,” the company said. “It speaks to something bigger: the right of smaller innovators to build without having their identity swallowed by tech giants.”

Musk’s xAI did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment on this story.
