NYT Connections today (game #805) – the answers

The answers to today’s Connections, game #805, are…

  • YELLOW: WINE VESSELS BOTTLE, CARAFE, DECANTER, GLASS
  • GREEN: RIPPED CLEFT, RENT, SPLIT, TORN
  • BLUE: KINDS OF SNAKES CORAL, GARTER, KING, RATTLE
  • PURPLE: ____ CALL BOOTY, CLOSE, COLD, CURTAIN
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 3 mistakes

After an easy game yesterday, I was expecting a more cryptic round today – and so it proved. WINE VESSELS was easy enough to get, but the rest of today’s Connections was really difficult.

I was pleased when I managed to finally get KINDS OF SNAKES, but it took me three tries before I finally achieved it. I was pretty sure about the category and had RATTLE, KING and CORAL locked down, but was clueless about the fourth.

I didn’t really know what I was looking for with the last two groups, but thinking that SPLIT, CLEFT and TORN must belong together, I tried CURTAIN first before swapping in RENT for no reason other than a blind guess.

Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Saturday, August 23, game #804)

  • YELLOW: U.S. PRESIDENTS ADAMS, FORD, GRANT, WASHINGTON
  • GREEN: ACTORS WHOSE LAST NAMES ARE ALSO VERBS CHEVY CHASE, CHRISTOPH WALTZ, GEOFFREY RUSH, TOM CRUISE
  • BLUE: KINDS OF POKER DRAW, OMAHA, STRIP, STUD
  • PURPLE: PROPER NOUNS AFTER GERUNDS IN ’90S MOVIE TITLES AMY, JOHN MALKOVICH, LAS VEGAS, PRIVATE RYAN

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final one, as you’ll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It’s a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It’s playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

USA’s Gio Reyna joins Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund

by admin August 24, 2025

Jul 20, 2025, 06:26 PM ET

United States midfielder Gio Reyna has completed his transfer to Borussia Mönchengladbach from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, the clubs announced Saturday.

Reyna, 22, has signed a three-year contract through the summer of 2028.

For Reyna, it means an end to his six-year stay at Dortmund, where he began his professional career after leaving New York City FC’s academy.

It represents a fresh start for Reyna after his initial sizable promise was stalled by a series of injuries and a struggle for first-team minutes.

“Borussia are a fantastic, big club,” Reyna said in a statement. “I’m delighted that the transfer has been able to be completed and am looking forward to getting to know everyone here, as well as tackling the upcoming games together.”

Reyna made just three starts in Germany’s Bundesliga last season having spent the second half of the previous campaign on loan at Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

While he was part of the Dortmund squad that reached the quarterfinals of this summer’s Club World Cup, Reyna made only one 12-minute substitute appearance. His participation in the tournament nonetheless meant he missed out on the U.S. men’s national team squad for the Concacaf Gold Cup.

Reyna, son of former U.S. midfielder Claudio Reyna, has won 32 caps for the USMNT and scored eight goals. With only a solitary substitute appearance since Mauricio Pochettino took over as coach last year, Reyna will now be hoping that the move to Gladbach can rejuvenate his career and earn him a place in the U.S. squad for next summer’s World Cup on home soil.

He joins a Gladbach side that finished 10th in the Bundesliga last season and kicks off the new campaign at home to Hamburg on Sunday.

“Gio brings plenty of experience with him, in addition to being a young player with plenty of potential,” said Roland Virkus, Borussia’s managing director for sport. “We have been monitoring him for a while now and are convinced that he has the qualities needed to help us on the pitch.

“He’s familiar with the Bundesliga and can play at a number of different positions in attack.”

State of Crypto: Crypto Takes Jackson Hole

by admin August 24, 2025

Policymakers of various stripes spoke at the SALT Wyoming conference this week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

You’re reading State of Crypto, a CoinDesk newsletter looking at the intersection of cryptocurrency and government. Click here to sign up for future editions.

The narrative

Congress is still on vacation, but policymakers trekked up to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to speak to the crypto industry — largely praising it or saying how they expect legislation to move forward. Here are some clips of what they said, courtesy of CoinDesk’s Helene Braun and others.

Why it matters

The industry has seen a lot of progress on crypto policy priorities this year. Lawmakers’ comments hint at what the last four months of 2025 might look like, and what we can expect from federal regulators.

Breaking it down

“I believe that we’ll have between 12 and 18 Democrats at least open to voting for market structure.” — Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott

“We will have it on the President’s desk before Thanksgiving.” — Senator Cynthia Lummis on market structure legislation

“Just imagine seeing on public equity all the transactions that go in and out of that company and how much information that gives you.” — Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson

“We need a clear, strategic regulatory framework that will facilitate the adoption of new technology, recognizing that in some cases, it may be inadequate and inappropriate to apply existing regulatory guidance to address emerging tech.” — Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman

“There is nothing to be afraid of when thinking about smart contracts, tokenization or distributed ledgers.” — Federal Reserve Board Governor Chris Waller

“It’s no secret that my side of the aisle would prefer not to see any sitting President — I won’t name one — participating in this market while a sitting president unless those assets are in a sealed trust.” — Rep. Angie Craig, ranking member on the House Agriculture Committee

  • Congress remains on break and no regulatory agency is holding an event this week.
  • (CNBC) Goldman Sachs expects U.S. consumers to pay for the tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump imposed on most countries trading with the U.S. A few days after that earlier article, Sony announced it would raise the price of Playstation 5 consoles in the U.S.
  • (Electronic Frontier Foundation) Wyoming and South Dakota have enacted stringent laws requiring websites to verify users’ ages if they host “any sexual content,” including “a broad range of non-pornographic content, including classic literature and art.”
  • (The Wall Street Journal) Despite Elon Musk’s public statements about founding a new political party, he is backtracking and instead considering supporting Vice President JD Vance and other Republicans, the Journal reported.

If you’ve got thoughts or questions on what I should discuss next week or any other feedback you’d like to share, feel free to email me at nik@coindesk.com or find me on Bluesky @nikhileshde.bsky.social.

You can also join the group conversation on Telegram.

See ya’ll next week!

See How David Corenswet Became Superman in His Audition Tape

by admin August 24, 2025

The world was abuzz with speculation just a few years ago when it came time for James Gunn to cast his new Superman. Even before the part ultimately went to David Corenswet, he was being floated around as a likely candidate, and now you can watch how he got the part.

YouTube account 21Casting posted the actor’s audition tape, which he performed with his wife Julia Warner. The three-minute video features him as Clark Kent being interviewed as Superman by Lois Lane over his intervention in Biayla—not Jarnanphur, as it is in the finished film—and early parts of their argument that helps inform the film’s core philosophy about the hero’s place in the world.

— DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) August 23, 2025

In a GQ cover story prior to Superman’s release, Gunn revealed he’d basically already picked Corenswet the moment he saw the audition, calling him “the guy to beat from the very beginning.” (It didn’t hurt that he sent Gunn a handwritten letter after the audition, too.) Turns out, quite a few people have spent years thinking he’d be good for Superman, and the only one who needed convincing was Corenswet himself: he previously told People that Warner thought he was a shoo-in once they made the tape. “I thought she was crazy, but she felt it from the beginning,” he told the magazine. “So if anything, I knew that she would be even more excited than I was.”

Corenswet’s not the only one with an audition tape hitting the internet this year: last week, we got to see how Britt Lower auditioned to play Helly R. in Severance, and we saw former Superman Henry Cavill’s old tryout for Bond back when the hunt was on pre-Casino Royale.

HYPE price eyes $50 as Hyperliquid crosses $2b milestone

Hyperliquid Grabs 80% of Perp DEX Market in One Year, Analysts Say

by admin August 23, 2025

Hyperliquid now controls roughly 80% of the decentralized perpetual futures market, highlighting its rapid dominance over competitors. However, this concentration raises concerns about sustainability and potential risks if trading volumes decline.

Summary

  • Hyperliquid has quickly become the leading decentralized perpetual futures platform, handling up to $30 billion in daily trades.
  • Its lean, self-funded team built a fast, execution-focused blockchain with fee-sharing incentives that attract traders and developers.
  • Despite rapid growth, risks like validator concentration, transparency gaps, and reliance on high trading volumes leave its future uncertain.

In just over a year, Hyperliquid has grown into the dominant player in decentralized perpetual futures, with Redstone estimating it controls about 80% of the market, trading volumes on par with big centralized exchanges, and fresh concerns over how long such concentrated activity can last.

At its peak, the platform processed as much as $30 billion in daily trades. That milestone, only a few decentralized exchanges have ever reached, despite being run by a lean team of just 11 people.

The platform, co-founded by Jeff Yan, a former Hudson River Trading quant and Harvard graduate, chose from the start to avoid venture capital, a decision that, combined with timing, gave Hyperliquid an opening it exploited faster than rivals.

Trading volume across decentralized exchanges | Source: CoinGecko

At the start of 2024, decentralized exchange dYdX had roughly 30% of trading volume across decentralized exchanges. By the end of that year, its share had fallen to around 7%, while Hyperliquid’s share stabilized above 65%, per CoinGecko’s data.

Much of Hyperliquid’s growth seems tied to execution. One-click trading, zero gas fees, and sub-second order finalization make it feel closer to a centralized exchange than most DEXs, which has helped attract both retail and professional traders.

“Built by a lean, self-funded team that refused to accept VC investors’ money, they’ve proven that technical excellence and community-first economics can outcompete well-funded competitors.”

RedStone

The platform runs on its own blockchain with HyperBFT, a consensus system designed to process hundreds of thousands of orders per second with settlement finality under a second. By focusing first on speed and reliability before expanding infrastructure, Hyperliquid appears to have earned credibility among traders faster than most peers.

Incentives and Revenue

The platform splits trading fees with its community. People who list new spot markets can keep up to half of the fees those trades generate. Developers who build user interfaces earn a share that can even exceed the protocol’s own cut. And those who launch perpetual markets share their fees with the investors who stake behind them.

This setup has pushed outside developers to build on the platform without needing grants or subsidies. They’ve already created tools to fill gaps like letting traders use one balance across different positions or borrow against their assets. The result is a growing ecosystem that competing decentralized exchanges haven’t been able to replicate.

Decentralized exchanges by trading volume | Source: DefiLlama

DefiLlama data shows Hyperliquid ranks third among decentralized exchanges by weekly trading volume, generating over $12 billion, behind only PancakeSwap and Uniswap. That surge has helped Hyperliquid produce more than $1 billion in annualized revenue, translating to an estimated $102.4 million per employee.

As previously reported by crypto.news, that figure exceeds Tether at $93 million, OnlyFans at $37.6 million, Nvidia at $3.6 million, and Cursor at $3.3 million.

Risks ahead

A joint report from OAK Research and GL Capital notes that despite Hyperliquid’s rapid growth, “several key milestones must still be met to validate [the valuation] thesis.”

“Centralization remains a concern, with only 16 validators, and the lack of transparency in the codebase could deter third-party developers. While full control over the infrastructure is a powerful model, it also exposes the platform to vulnerabilities, as demonstrated by the HLP incident.”

OAK Research and GL Capital

The platform’s reliance on sustained trading volume further amplifies risk. A prolonged bear market could temporarily depress returns and challenge the token buyback system that supports much of the HYPE ecosystem.

From a valuation perspective, analysts describe the opportunity as “asymmetric risk/reward,” with HYPE’s fair value estimated between $32 and $49 under conservative assumptions, which is about 86% of the top of that range, given that HYPE is trading at $42.

Hyperliquid has demonstrated rapid adoption, but it still faces multiple structural and market risks. Validator concentration, transparency gaps, reliance on high trading volumes, and execution-dependent growth all mean that results remain sensitive to both internal decisions and external market conditions.

Inside XYZVerse’s community hype and presale explosion

by admin August 23, 2025

Disclosure: This article does not represent investment advice. The content and materials featured on this page are for educational purposes only.

XYZVerse presale tops $15m as the sports-themed memecoin builds hype in betting, gaming, and community culture.

Summary

  • XYZVerse presale hits $15m as the sports-themed memecoin surges over 5,000% in early stages.
  • Stage-based pricing fuels XYZVerse hype, blending memes, sports, and real-world crypto utility.
  • It could become 2025’s breakout memecoin if it sustains traction because of its community-driven momentum.

The memecoin market never takes a day off. Each cycle crowns a new community darling, and in 2025, that spotlight is shifting toward XYZVerse (XYZ) — a sports-themed token blending crypto culture with betting, gaming, and community-driven hype.

With its presale already pulling in over $15 million and token prices climbing stage after stage, XYZVerse is shaping up as more than a fleeting memecoin. But what’s actually fueling this surge, and why are early adopters betting that XYZ could be one of this year’s breakout tokens?

What is XYZVerse?

  • Coin name: XYZVerse (XYZ)
  • Contract: 0xD75Ab4b69F2eDfb072fDFD7e2D15a875f95Ae5ae
  • Funds raised: $15m+
  • Launch date: Q4 2025 (listing target: $0.10)
  • Price performance: Up 5,300% since presale start ($0.0001 → $0.0054)
  • Community: 21k+ followers on X, 12K+ Telegram members
  • Security: Audited by Pessimistic Audit & SolidProof

At its core, XYZVerse claims to be the first all-sports memecoin — an attempt to connect sports betting, staking, and meme culture under one token.

A cornerstone of its strategy is a partnership with bookmaker.XYZ, a decentralized sportsbook and casino. Holders get perks like exclusive betting rewards, play-to-earn experiences, and access to upcoming gamified dApps. The roadmap also promises Telegram-based mini games, airdrops, and staking platforms.

Presale dynamics: From fixed stages to live price climb

XYZVerse’s presale has been one of its biggest talking points. Early backers saw the token rise from $0.0001 to $0.0054 — a more than 5,000% jump — through a stage-based model.

Recently, the team introduced a twist: instead of fixed stages, the price now increases with every $100,000 raised. That tweak creates urgency; each buy literally moves the price higher.

So far, the results speak for themselves: more than $15 million raised toward a $30 million target. To boost transparency, a live Telegram feed logs each new contribution, letting the community watch the presale progress in real time.

Every second that passes, someone else is buying. Get XYZ while the presale is live.

Is XYZVerse secure?

Skepticism comes naturally in memecoin land. Many projects launch fast and die faster. But XYZVerse is taking some credibility-building steps:

  • Audit: Its smart contract was audited by Pessimistic, which reported no critical issues and highlighted gas efficiency.
  • Deflationary model: With a fixed supply of 100 billion tokens, XYZVerse includes a burn mechanism via buybacks, helping reduce inflationary pressure.

Transparency around audits and tokenomics sets XYZVerse apart in a space often criticized for cutting corners.

Tokenomics breakdown

  • Total supply: 100b tokens
  • Burn allocation: 17.13% (a notable deflationary lever)
  • Marketing & liquidity: 30% combined
  • Ecosystem growth & development: 10%
  • Community rewards & airdrops: 10%
  • Team allocation: 10%

With 40% of the supply community-directed (presale, KOLs, airdrops), the model signals a grassroots-first approach. The relatively modest team allocation also suggests discipline compared to many meme projects.

Community sentiment

Momentum is visible across XYZVerse’s socials. Over 96% of CoinMarketCap users rated the project bullish, and its Telegram and X channels show daily chatter about buys, presale milestones, and speculation about post-launch performance.

It’s the kind of organic hype most early-stage projects envy: fans posting about going “all in,” calling it a “solid project,” and anticipating the launch like a sporting event itself.

With community energy continuing to rise and broader market sentiment improving, XYZVerse is shaping up to be one of the most promising memecoin contenders of the next cycle.

Road ahead

XYZVerse has laid out a roadmap that goes beyond presale hype:

  • Launching staking and rewards dApps
  • Expanding Telegram-based play-to-earn games
  • Partnering with influencers and athletes to reach mainstream sports fans
  • Aggressive marketing and sponsorships
  • Ongoing token burns and liquidity support

If executed, these steps could help XYZVerse transition from memecoin frenzy to a broader web3 sports-entertainment hub.

Bottom line

XYZVerse is riding a wave of community hype, presale momentum, and sports-meets-crypto culture. Its blend of meme-driven excitement and real-world betting utility makes it a project to watch in 2025.

But the ultimate test will come post-listing: whether XYZ can maintain traction once the presale buzz fades. If it delivers on staking, gaming, and partnerships, XYZVerse could evolve into one of this cycle’s rare memecoins with staying power.

Microsoft launches Copilot AI function in Excel, but warns not to use it in ‘any task requiring accuracy or reproducibility’

by admin August 23, 2025

Certain Windows 365 Copilot users now have access to a new feature in Excel that lets you use Microsoft’s Copilot AI to generate formulas, but you might want to be careful how you use it. Microsoft is already warning users that the AI might not always be accurate.

The new “COPILOT” function allows you to skip writing Excel formulas yourself by telling Copilot what you want to do and the cells you want to use. For instance, you could type in “=COPILOT(“Summarize this feedback”, A2:A20)” to have Copilot generate a formula that summarizes the content in a column of cells. The examples Microsoft suggests in the support page for the COPILOT function focus on classifying, summarizing, and generating content.

However, Microsoft specifically warns not to use it for “any task requiring accuracy or reproducibility,” like numerical calculations. Microsoft also advises against using the feature for “financial reporting, legal documents, or other high-stakes scenarios,” so basically most of the things people turn to Excel for.

Related articles

Much like with other generative AI tools, if you’re using the COPILOT function, you need to keep an eye out for the AI hallucinating strange results or misunderstanding your prompts, which of course calls its basic utility into question.

Aside from accuracy, privacy is also an obvious concern here. Microsoft says in the announcement blog post that “Your data sent through the COPILOT function is never used to train or improve the AI models. The information you input remains confidential and is used solely to generate your requested output.”

This is still a beta feature, so Microsoft is still refining it with the help of user feedback and it isn’t widely available yet. Right now, it’s only available to Microsoft 365 Copilot Beta Channel users. Functionality is also somewhat limited even beyond the accuracy concerns—the COPILOT function is currently maxed out at 100 calls per 10 minutes or 300 calls per hour. It can’t access “live web data or internal business documents,” either.

Scientists Have Identified the Origin of an Extraordinarily Powerful Outer Space Radio Wave

by admin August 23, 2025

The Earth is constantly receiving space signals that contain vital information about extremely energetic phenomena. Among the most peculiar are brief pulses of extremely high-energy radio waves, known as fast radio bursts (FRB). Astronomers compare them to a powerful lighthouse that shines for milliseconds in the middle of a rough, distant sea. Detecting one of these signals is an achievement in itself, but identifying its origin and understanding the nature of its source remains one of the great challenges of science.

That is why recent research led by Northwestern University in the United States has captured the attention of the astronomical community. The team not only detected one of the brightest FRBs ever recorded, but also traced its origin with unprecedented precision.

The pulse, identified as RBFLOAT, arrived in March 2025, lasted just a few milliseconds, and released as much energy as the sun produces in four days. Thanks to a new method of analysis, the researchers located its origin in an arm of a spiral galaxy located 130 million light-years away, in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major. The research was published in the journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The CHIME radio telescope in Canada, one of the world’s leading FRB observatories, and a subnetwork of smaller stations called Outriggers detected the anomalous outburst. CHIME characterized the signal, while the Outriggers triangulated it to a narrow region of space. Optical and X-ray telescopes then provided complementary data. The team achieved a precision of 13 parsecs, equivalent to 42 light-years, within the galaxy NGC 4141.

Astronomers had previously pinpointed other FRBs, but in those cases the signals were repeated, which made the analysis easier. “RBFLOAT was the first non-repeating source localized to such precision,” said Sunil Simha, coauthor of the study, in a university statement. “These are much harder to locate. Thus, even detecting RBFLOAT is proof of concept that CHIME is indeed capable of detecting such events and building a statistically interesting sample of FRBs.”

What Caused the RBFLOAT?

Scientists are still not sure what causes RBFs, but they have some ideas. Because of the enormous energy they release and the brevity of the phenomenon, it is likely that they originate from extreme cosmic events, such as neutron star mergers, magnetars, or pulsars.

In the case of RBFLOAT, the data indicate that it is located in a star-forming region with really massive stars. The triangulation places the signal in a galactic arm where new stars are also being born. This suggests that it could be a magnetar, a subclass of neutron star with a magnetic field billions of times stronger than that of the Earth.

The experience with RBFLOAT will allow the team to apply the same triangulation technique to future signals. The authors estimate that they could achieve about 200 accurate RBF detections per year with just the signals CHIME captures.

“For years, we’ve known FRBs occur all over the sky, but pinning them down has been painstakingly slow. Now, we can routinely tie them to specific galaxies, even down to neighborhoods within those galaxies,” said Yuxin Dong, another member of the team.

This story originally appeared on WIRED en Español and has been translated from Spanish.
