All the Weird and Wacky Gadgets Hitting the Scene

by admin May 20, 2025

The annual Computex computing conference in Taipei, Taiwan, isn’t going to be filled to the brim with as many wacky gadgets as CES 2025, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing noteworthy. Nvidia tried to make the show about itself with the latest in its Blackwell series of GPUs, launching the GeForce RTX 5060 and expanding its AI software suite, and we also got new laptops via the Razer Blade 14 and Acer Predator Triton 14 AI. But amid those expected releases, we also got some quirkier releases, which may prove to be a lot more interesting than an entry-level graphics card.

If you’re on the lookout for the fun stuff, we’ve got you covered. We’ll be keeping this post updated as we see more news from Computex, so stay tuned.

Elgato’s Stream Deck ‘Modules’ Wants to Give Everybody Desktop Buttons

© Elgato

Content creators swear by Stream Decks, but the average layperson may not understand what all the fuss is about. These devices are control panels that are tied to commands on your PC. These keys could offer controls as simple as opening up Adobe Premiere, or as complex as exporting a finished program. Elgato, the maker of some of the more-popular decks, now imagines its Stream Decks as a “platform.” First up is a slew of modules that offer the most-barebones Stream Deck experience with variations that include six, 15, or 32 keys. There’s a separate dock that will let you network a Stream Deck directly through ethernet, as well, but the big push is with a Virtual Stream Deck. This is merely a program that lets you create custom hotkeys you can access with a single click on a desktop.

Asus ROG’s Split Keyboard for Gamers Could Moonlight as a Pair of Nunchucks

© Asus

If Razer can give us an ergonomic vertical mouse, why shouldn’t Asus’ gamer-centric ROG brand hand us a split keyboard? The company said the Falcata 75% keyboard is good if you only need your WASD keys and need to free up desktop space. It’s using the company’s own ROG HFX V2 magnetic keyboard switches with a customizable 0.1 to 3.5mm travel. But better yet, the switches are hot swappable if you prefer a row of Cherry keys. The split design and removable angled palm rests should offer better ergonomics for people who have issues with carpal tunnel or wrist pain on a traditional singular keyboard. Asus would much rather talk about its 8,000Hz polling rate, which is a measure of how quickly the device can report its key presses to the PC.

The Return of the Mouse With Too Many Keys is Now a Pseudo Stream Deck

© Corsair

Corsair’s Scimitar Elite WL SE was built for gamers who need to quickly hit innumerable hotkeys, and Corsair wants its gamer mouse to be a productivity device as well. The mouse sports a grand total of 16 programmable buttons, the majority of which are on a large “KeySlider” located on the left side of the mouse. This is the kind of mouse that’s ostensibly for competitive MMO gamers who want to have all their actions at easy reach on one hand. Combined with Elgato’s new Stream Deck features, the Scimitar can now bring up Virtual Stream Deck or even execute commands if you need to quickly access your work apps, open up web pages, or access stream controls. Oh, it also comes in white.

This Is Where I’d Put an Xbox Handheld, if I Had One

© Asus

We were crossing our fingers, hoping to finally see the supposed Xbox-branded handheld PC being produced by Asus at this year’s Computex. Instead, in the first few days, the company dropped a peripheral that seems a little too on the nose if it’s still pretending that an ROG Ally 2 doesn’t exist. The ROG Bulwark Dock is like the many other official and third-party devices meant to keep your Steam Deck or whatever ROG Ally or Ally X you have on hand upright and on a charge. It’s a 7-in-1 dock that supports 4K at 144Hz output through HDMI 2.1. The nice thing about this dock is that the 90-degree USB-C cable isn’t married to any one spot on the device, making it easier to plug into the port of whatever handheld you’re using for power passthrough. Asus says this design, with its shallow cup, will work with phones and laptops as well, but we assume it should be good for an Xbox handheld, whenever that arrives.

You Can Use AI to Make the Plugins for Nvidia’s AI

© Nvidia

Nvidia’s AI-ception now includes its own Project G-Assist, combined with a coding tool powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. G-Assist is the company’s chatbot integrated with the Nvidia app, and currently, it’s only capable of offering barebones PC diagnostics or suggesting changes to your graphics settings. The best aspect of the chatbot’s “small language model” is that it works fully on-device, but users themselves may be able to amend the AI’s limited feature set with a plugin builder. This could allow users to make G-Assist interact with other apps. But you don’t even need to know how to code well to build a plugin, as the plugin builder uses a separate AI chatbot to write it for you. Nvidia suggested this will work with apps like Spotify for music and volume control, but we’d much prefer to see it work as a legitimate PC assistant so we don’t need to access several competing apps just to change settings on our keyboards and mice.

This Cute PC Case Wouldn’t Look Out of Place in a Field of Flowers

© Hyte

Judging by their name, Hyte’s X50 cases would seem like any other boxy PC case, but you can already tell by that image that the design is very, very different from the standard black boxes most people are willing to stick under their desk. Both the X50 and X50 Air are made with 1mm-thick steel frame alongside micro-mesh and 4mm laminated glass panels. These are all formed around the cases’ rounded design. The “Air” model only comes in white or black, but the X50 colorways, including “Cherry,” “Taro Milk,” “Strawberry Milk,” and “Matcha Milk” are all colors you would normally find at your local bubble tea spot. At $150, the X50 seems like the kind of case that will make your PC stand out from the pack of hard-edged fish tank designs you see from most companies. The case should arrive sometime this summer.

Dell’s New AI-Centric Laptop Has the Worst Name Imaginable

© Dell

This is the Dell Pro Max Plus. It’s a name that squashes every rank of iPhone nomenclature into one. Beyond the company’s increasingly confusing naming conventions, the Pro Max Plus has one interesting component you won’t find on most other laptops. It contains a discrete NPU, namely the Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 chip. An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a dedicated portion of a chip or discrete processor for handling intensive AI processes. A typical PC with the latest AMD, Intel, or Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor can support between 45 and 50 TOPS, or trillions of operations per second. That in itself is a derived value for generally comparing AI processing. The Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 hits around 350 TOPS.

It’s not nearly the max TOPS of a discrete graphics processor (the lowest-level Blackwell GPU from Nvidia, the RTX 5060, can do 614 TOPS), but the Dell Pro Max Plus Ultra Premium Supreme, or whatever it’s called, won’t have to worry nearly as much about power consumption with an AI-specific chip.

JPMorgan Opens The Door To Bitcoin: CEO Supports Client Crypto Purchases

by admin May 20, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

JPMorgan Chase has announced it will allow clients to purchase Bitcoin (BTC), marking a notable development in the mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrency. However, CEO Jamie Dimon, a long-time critic of Bitcoin and the broader crypto market, clarified that his personal views on the digital currency remain unchanged.

Clients Can Buy Bitcoin, But Skepticism Remains

During JPMorgan’s annual investor day on Monday, Dimon stated, “We are going to allow you to buy it. We’re not going to custody it. We’re going to put it in statements for clients.”

This decision comes amid a growing trend among financial institutions to embrace cryptocurrency, with competitors like Morgan Stanley already offering access to spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for qualifying clients since August.

Despite this progressive move, Dimon reiterated his skepticism about Bitcoin, citing concerns related to money laundering and the lack of clarity surrounding ownership.

He pointed out that Bitcoin has been associated with “the sex trafficking, the terrorism,” indicating his belief that its primary use cases are problematic. “I don’t think you should smoke, but I defend your right to smoke,” Dimon remarked, adding, “I defend your right to buy Bitcoin.”

JPMorgan Explores Direct Crypto Investments

While JPMorgan has primarily limited its crypto offerings to futures-based products, the bank is reportedly considering providing clients access to Bitcoin ETFs, which would allow for a more direct investment in the cryptocurrency.

Historically, Dimon has been vocal about his opposition to Bitcoin; during a Senate hearing in late 2023, he described it as “worthless” and claimed that its only true use case is for criminal activity.

His skepticism was further emphasized at the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos, where he dismissed BTC as “the pet rock,” expressing frustration over the ongoing media discussions about it. “This is the last time I’m talking about this with CNBC, so help me God,” he declared.

The context for JPMorgan’s decision comes amid a changing regulatory landscape in the US. Following the election of President Donald Trump, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) began to ease their anti-crypto guidance, allowing banks greater flexibility in their dealings with digital assets.

Although the Federal Reserve (Fed) has issued notices restricting certain crypto activities, banks can now custody cryptocurrencies, which was previously hindered by an accounting rule known as SAB 121.

The daily chart shows BTC’s price attempt to consolidate above $105,000. Source: BTCUSDT on TradingView.com

At the time of writing, BTC is trading at $105,400, which is just 3% below its record high of $109,000 achieved during the first quarter uptrend of the market. Looking at monthly gains, the market’s leading cryptocurrency has recovered 24% after dropping sharply to $74,000 in April.

LEGO seemingly shuts down Bionicle fan game after 8 years of development, because as we all know Bionicle is a scorching hot IP that the company is doing a lot with right now

by admin May 20, 2025

Bionicle: Masks of Power – a fan game that has been in development for eight years – has been shut down following a request from The LEGO Group, its developers claim.

In a statement released to the public via a Google Doc, the team broke down the situation for fans who’ve been waiting to actually play the game after all this time. The devs, who were preparing to drop a demo this August, claim that LEGO reached out to request they shut down development on the project and remove the game from the public eye.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

Manage cookie settings

In the statement, the team expressed its historical intention to keep in line with the official LEGO Fair Play Guidelines, as to not draw the eye of an legal action from LEGO looking to protect its copyright. Despite these intentions, the hammer has seemingly come down. While it says no official reason for the takedown was given, the team suspects that it was because the average person may mistake the game for an official game, rather than a fan project. It seems this fan game was a victim of its own good SEO.

In reaction to the news, the development team has released a walkthrough of the demo, and has decided to form a new indie studio: Unmasked Games. That name is great by the way, hinting towards its Bionicle roots but taking the mask off for future endeavors. They conclude the statement with the following: “This has been heartbreaking news for our entire team, but we’re also incredibly excited about what the future has in store, and for what we’ll get the chance to create next. We hope that you’re all just as excited as we are. For the final time… May the Great Spirit guide you.”

Bionicle has been a dead IP product line since 2010 by the way. That’s the last time any actual toys were produced by The LEGO group. There was a series of comics written by Greg Farshtey, though that has also been dead for over a decade. It’s clear that the Bionicle IP is scorching hot, something LEGO is clearly doing a lot with. Sarcasm aside, such are the ways of legal departments. IP must be protected, even for IP that has had no development or frankly relevancy for over a decade. That is, aside from a relatively small community of fans who were, until very recently, excited for a new fan game. Damn shame!

It’s a bummer. It’s a common belief that the best way to approach making fan games is to “shut the f**k up”, but obviously not all fan project teams have the luxury of silence and a sudden shadow drop before any cease and desist can come through and ruin all the fun. Still, if you were excited for Mask of Power, why not give the folks at Unmasked Games some love, and support them going forward.

We’ve reached out to The LEGO Group for comment, and will update this article if and when we get a response.

When’s the last time you even thought about Bionicle, this fan game aside? Let us know below.

Welcome to Derry’ Is Creepy in All the Best Ways

by admin May 20, 2025

The idea of setting a TV series in the realm of Stephen King’s It already had us hooked. Then there’s the bonus of having the show co-developed by It filmmaker Andy Muschietti, who’ll also direct  four episodes. Then we learned Bill Skarsgård would be reprising the role of Pennywise.

The first-look images released last year were tantalizing, but HBO’s eerie first teaser has solidified our ravenous desire for It: Welcome to Derry, a show we’d 100% drop into a sewer occupied by a demonic clown to watch.

Get ready to go back to where IT all began… 🎈 #ITWelcometoDerry is coming this fall to HBO Max. pic.twitter.com/SOhXEA6yYe

— Max (@StreamOnMax) May 20, 2025

The imagery is nightmare-inducing—as is the suggestion of Pennywise’s ever-lurking evil. In no way would we ever want to actually enter the city limits of Derry, Maine, but we will absolutely sink our pointy teeth into this show and spend some time there at a safe distance.

It: Welcome to Derry is set in 1962 and takes inspiration from Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel. More specifically it expands the world of Andy Muschietti’s two It films—which take place in 1988-’89 and 2016, meaning the series will act as a prequel of sorts. The story is by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, who are also among the show’s executive producers.

Fuchs wrote the first episode; he’s co-showrunner with fellow executive producer Brad Caleb Kane. Andy Muschietti directs four of the season’s nine episodes.

In addition to Skarsgård, the It: Welcome to Derry cast includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso.

It: Welcome to Derry hits HBO and Max in 2025.

AAVE rallies over 25% as a golden cross pattern nears

AAVE rallies over 25% as a golden cross pattern nears

by admin May 20, 2025

AAVE rallied as much as 25% today, fueled by growing optimism across its ecosystem and a spike in trading activity.

Aave (AAVE) soared to an intraday high of $269 on May 20 afternoon Asian time, marking its highest level since February and making it one of the top-performing cryptocurrencies in the market right now. From its April low, AAVE has now climbed more than 132%.

The surge came alongside a spike in trading volume. According to data from crypto.news, over $800 million worth of AAVE changed hands today, its most active day since early March.

Meanwhile, AAVE’s futures open interest hit an all-time high of $569 million, reflecting strong demand from derivatives traders. Its positive funding rate for two straight weeks also suggests the majority of the market is still betting on more upside, with long traders currently paying short traders.

Traders appeared to welcome progress on the GENIUS Act, which recently cleared a key procedural vote in the U.S. Senate. The bill proposes a regulatory framework for stablecoins, an area critical to DeFi protocols like Aave.

Given Aave’s reliance on stablecoins like USDC, DAI, and its native GHO, the prospect of regulatory clarity could encourage more institutional participation and bolster confidence across its ecosystem.

AAVE also got a boost from solidifying its lead as the top DeFi protocol by TVL. According to DeFiLlama, its total value locked jumped nearly 40% in the past month to reach $40.7 billion, far surpassing Lido, which has $23.3 billion.

This growth is translating into real revenue. AAVE has raked in over $250 million in fees year-to-date, putting it among the most profitable protocols in the space.

Momentum on the technical front is also being matched by a rise in daily active addresses, which have spiked 57% over the past two days.

Source: Santiment

At the same time, its weighted social sentiment has also flipped positive, a sign that market participants are growing bullish on AAVE’s short-term outlook.

Potential golden cross in development

On the 1-day/USDT chart, the Aroon Up indicator is at 100% while Aroon Down sits at 0%, meaning bullish momentum is dominant. The Chaikin Money Flow Index is reading 0.26, which signals more capital flowing into the token.

A golden cross also looks imminent on the daily chart, as AAVE’s 50-day and 200-day moving averages inch closer to a crossover, often considered a bullish signal.

AAVE 50-day and 200-day EMA chart — May 20 | Source: crypto.news

The token is nearing the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level at $271.35. A clean breakout above this level could pave the way toward the 50% retracement level at $347.19, roughly 30% higher than current levels.

On the flip side, if a pullback happens, key support lies near $226.45, which could serve as a solid bounce zone before the uptrend resumes.

At press time, AAVE was trading around $267 per coin.

South Korean Actor Hwang Jung-eum Faces Backlash for Embezzling $3 Million to Buy Crypto

by admin May 20, 2025

In brief

  • South Korean actor Hwang Jung-eum admitted in court to embezzling $3.1M (₩4.34B) from her agency to invest in crypto.
  • SBS Plus channel removed her segments from the final episode of Because I’m Single following backlash.
  • Advertisers like Daesang Wellife Nucare have pulled her campaign content after the scandal broke.

South Korean actor Hwang Jung-eum has been edited out of the final episode of SBS Plus’s reality show ‘Because I’m Single,’ following her courtroom admission that she embezzled $3.1 million (₩4.34 billion) from her own company to invest in crypto.

“Hwang Jung-eum’s VCR segments will not appear in today’s final episode, which airs at 8:30 p.m.,” the production team said Tuesday as per local media reports. “Her comments as an MC will also be minimized.”

The decision comes after Hwang testified last Thursday at the Jeju District Court, admitting to misappropriating approximately $3 million (₩4.2 billion) from a family-run agency she fully owns and using the funds to buy crypto.

Prosecutors indicted her under Korea’s Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.

“I sincerely apologize for causing concern over this shameful matter,” Hwang said in a statement released through her new agency, Y.One Entertainment. “I made the investment in hopes of growing the company, but it was a hasty and immature decision.”

The scandal has quickly derailed her public image. Daesang Wellife Nucare, a health drink brand, pulled down newly launched promotional content featuring the actor just days after its release.

Ad posters and videos were scrubbed from the brand’s official social media, and a related online event was abruptly canceled. The company cited “changes in internal schedules” as the reason.

Hwang’s former agency, where the embezzlement took place, was a one-person operation that managed only her.

Her legal team argued that the misused funds originated from her personal entertainment income and were temporarily held in her name because corporations are restricted from holding crypto directly.

“Since the agency’s profits ultimately stem from the defendant’s own work, they can be seen as rightfully belonging to her,” her attorney said in court.

Hwang has since sold crypto assets to repay part of the amount and plans to liquidate real estate holdings to cover the rest. A second hearing is scheduled for August.

The scandal coincides with a turbulent period in Hwang’s personal life, including an ongoing divorce. Her role on Because I’m Single marked her return to television last October.

Only press who previewed the RTX 5060 under Nvidia’s test conditions are getting review drivers, reports claim

by admin May 20, 2025

In classic me fashion, I swanned off for a few days just as another graphics card fracas has spilled out into public view. At the centre this time is the previously unassuming RTX 5060, which you may have noticed is due for launch today yet only has a handful of “hands-on previews” to tell you how big of a graphics it does. Allegedly, that’s because Nvidia have been keeping hold of the drivers needed for full reviews, only providing them at the eleventh hour to press outlets that have previously run these previews. No preview? No review, at least until the drivers release publicly later today, and what’s more, the same reports say that these previews were only offered under strict testing provisos set by Nvidia themselves.

According to VideoCardz and Hardware Unboxed, the mandated test conditions supposedly range from only allowing certain games for benchmarking – judging from the previews currently online, these were Doom: The Dark Ages, Avowed, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy and Marvel Rivals – to the more egregious demand that RTX 5060 performance figures would focus on DLSS 4’s Multi Frame Generation (MFG). And, in turn, would only be compared to results from older XX60 GPUs that lack DLSS frame gen support entirely.

“We worked with a few chosen media on previews with a pre-release driver,” an Nvidia spokesperson told me this afternoon. No comment on the review driver situation, other than a 5pm BST release time, was given.

RPS was not invited to take part in these previews, and I can’t imagine agreeing to such terms if we were. Although it doesn’t appear that Nvidia required previewers to give positive RTX 5060 takes, with several highlighting the shortcomings of its 8GB VRAM limit, the limited game selection and emphasis on frame-genned performance versus the much older RTX 3060 and RTX 2060 Super are clearly intended to push a particular narrative: one that at best downplays the drawbacks of frame generation and at worst misleads readers with an unhelpfully narrow view of relative performance. GameStar, a German site that took Nvidia up on the offer, said in their preview that the GPU giant even specified the in-game settings that each game should be tested with.

The sense that a big, green thumb is pressing down on the critical scales is deepened by the alleged trading of earlier review drivers for a compliant preview. Even if, by that point, reviewers are free to use their own, independently-set benchmarks, the initial wave of RTX 5060 reviews will come from publications that Nvidia has – accurately or otherwise – deemed more friendly than others. Those who refused the locked-down previews, and have thus demonstrated less of a willingness to go along with the desired messaging, will be forced to wait before sharing impressions.

I can’t claim absolute moral superiority here because again, I wasn’t invited, and thus didn’t have the chance to send a “Thanks but no thanks” email (even I hadn’t simultaneously been too busy recovering from gin-assisted groomsman duty). Still, yeah, not a fan.

I have recently noticed Nvidia PRs becoming unusually pushy about how great it would be to test such and such frame generation in such and such game, but functionally those have only ever been suggestions, and I’ve never faced even a veiled hint at retribution for ignoring them in my reviews. Nonetheless, I now find myself in the bizarre position of having had physical possession of an RTX 5060 for nearly a week (posted by Zotac, with no strings attached other than to please not lose or break it), yet don’t have the software means to test or appraise it on the day of release. Like, man, at least Bethesda didn’t send us copies of Starfield while they were withholding the activation keys.

More disturbing still is that this isn’t even the only accusation of editorial manhandling to be laid at Nvidia’s feet today. Big-deal tech YooToobers Gamers Nexus claimed in a video (above) that Nvidia have, with varying levels of subtlety, threatened to cut off their interview access to Nvidia engineering staff in response to a perceived lack of focus on DLSS and MFG performance testing in their reviews. Gamers Nexus have, in fact, produced multiple long-form vids on these topics specifically.

It isn’t unheard of for, nor technically outside the rights of, companies to pick and choose who gets primo access for coverage. In tech media especially, there may even be a minor, ethically unbothersome quid-pro-quo involved: attending a virtual briefing, for instance, in exchange for getting onto the review list. But there’s a honking great difference between asking journalists to sit through a thirty-minute slideshow and, essentially, demanding editorial jurisdiction over how their products are evaluated. Nvidia, one of the richest, most powerful firms on Earth, should know better – and should have at least had an idea that being caught fiddling with the independent review process might cause more damage to the RTX 5060 than a few variations of “It’s not much faster than the 4060, is it?”
