Miyamoto Just Wants To Make More Pikmin Stuff

by admin May 21, 2025

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s legendary game designer and the creator of Mario, Zelda, and more, is a busy guy these days. He’s helping Nintendo make movies while also being involved in the construction of Mario theme parks at Universal Studios. But really, it seems like Miyamoto just wants to make more Pikmin games, movies, and other stuff.

The Week In Games: What’s Releasing Beyond Pikmin 4

In a recent and lengthy interview with IGN, Miyamoto talked about his work on the upcoming Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country areas of Universal Studios Orlando. But when the interviewer mentioned spotting some hidden Pikmin in the theme park, Miyamoto couldn’t stop talking about how great the little creatures are and how he wants more people to love his odd creations which first appeared in 2001’s Pikmin on the GameCube. The latest main game in the series was released in 2023 for Switch.

“I spent a lot of time the past five, six years really wanting to grow Pikmin,” said Miyamoto. “Obviously a lot of that is focused around Pikmin Bloom and there was also new Pikmin titles that released. But I wanted to see if there’s other ways that we can have people engage and get to know Pikmin that’s outside of the population that plays video games, for example.”

Miyamoto continued, apparently having waited years to unleash all his Pikmin thoughts on the first person lucky enough to ask him about the strange franchise featuring a tiny alien man controlling an army of small, cute critters.

“And it really stems back to 20 years ago when we did a presentation where it starts off with, there’s a Pikmin next to you,” said Miyamoto. “And so in Nintendo there’s sort of like an unwritten rule. Mario needs to stay in the Mario universe, or Splatoon needs to stay in Splatoon, and we don’t use different characters in the same place. But Pikmin has this kind of unwritten rule where they’re okay to appear with other characters.”

When asked if Pikmin could ever appear in movies or TV shows, Miyamoto couldn’t say yes or no, of course, but explained that he would love for that to happen one day.

“I really see Nintendo as sort of like a talent agency and we have within our roster a lot of talented characters,” said Miyamoto. “So we create a game with a certain gameplay concept, gameplay experience, and then we look at the roster and see who would best fit this gameplay concept or experience.”

“So looking at things from that perspective, I think Pikmin has a lot of potential to be used in many different occasions. When you’re looking at small kids, they have a certain appeal for things that are cute and when they grow older, maybe in their twenties, they start to lose appeal for that. But I think Pikmin has this unique ability to have appeal across a broad range in that it’s still appealing for both younger audiences and older audiences and in Japan. And so I’m hoping that we can expand that globally. So whether it’s some kind of a movie or show, things like that would be really fun.”

Look, Nintendo, Miyamoto has done so much for you and your company. I say you give the man a few million dollars and a team and let him make all the weird Pikmin crap he wants to make while he’s still able to do so. It’s the least you can do. And the world would be a better place if we had more Pikmin stuff in it.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford wades back into the Borderlands 4 pricing controversy: ‘Game budgets are increasing … it’s getting gnarly out there’

by admin May 21, 2025

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford took some heat yesterday when he dismissed concerns about Borderlands 4 potentially launching with an $80 price tag, saying on X that “if you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” Today, in an effort to calm the roiling waters left in the wake of that ill-advised statement, he shared a brief video clip he described as “the truth” about Borderlands 4 pricing, and the “reality” of the rising costs of videogame development.

The clip was actually recorded a couple weeks ago at PAX East, but Pitchford reshared it earlier today because it’s definitely relevant to the controversy of the moment, and provides a slightly more nuanced take on the matter of game pricing. Pitchford begins by saying he doesn’t know what the price of Borderlands 4 will be, but then dips into why higher prices across the board are almost certainly on the horizon.

“On one level we’ve got a competitive marketplace where people that make those [pricing] choices want to sell as many units as possible, and they want to be careful about people that are price sensitive,” Pitchford says in the clip. “So there’s some folks that don’t want to see the prices go up—even the ones deciding what the prices are.

You may like

“There’s other folks accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing and there’s tariffs for the retail packaging, and like—it’s getting gnarly out there, you guys. Borderlands 4 has more than twice the development budget of Borderlands 3. More than twice.”

And that, he continued, is “why Borderlands 4 is so awesome: Because you guys showed up and supported Borderlands 3 and we had the budget so we could more than double the budget [of Borderlands 4] and feel confident in that. And that’s awesome, when the revenue comes in we could spend it to make better bigger games and better games.”

There’s no doubt that videogame development costs have exploded, but I can’t shake the feeling that Borderlands 4 costing twice as much to make as Borderlands 3 isn’t so much “awesome” as it is a reflection of the inherent unsustainability of big-budget game development. Simply put, is Borderlands 4 going to be twice as good as Borderlands 3? I’m going to guess not: It’s nice to have lots of money to throw around but no guarantee of quality or, more importantly, success—and as we’ve seen with recent releases like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, “success” is a highly malleable term, subject to the whims of the C-suite.

If you want the truth, here it is: pic.twitter.com/3bqdA5gIU2May 21, 2025

Pitchford’s biggest problem, though, isn’t the reality of our capitalist society, but the nature of his original messaging that left everyone so cold, and today’s post doesn’t seem to have changed many minds. While there’s some sympathy for his kinder, gentler approach to Borderlands 4 pricing in this PAX video, plenty of anger remains, as do assumptions that the new Borderlands will launch at $80 for the standard edition.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

“The thing that you guys need to realize is that most people don’t care what your game’s budget is,” PanicRolling wrote in reply to Pitchford’s post. “It is your own fault that you decided to spend ‘more than twice’ what BL3 cost to make this one, and I almost promise your game is going to fail financially because of that decision.”

“Videogames aren’t food, they’re entertainment and each game is fighting for a customer’s money and time,” GetFitWithJared wrote in a separate reply. “If gamers feel that $80 is too much for one game, they’re going to move on to something more affordable and not look back.”

Maybe inevitably, Pitchford didn’t help himself on that front with his closing remarks. “If it is cheaper [than $80] then maybe we’ll sell you that minimap that you guys want, but we’ll develop later,” he said. “How bad do you want that? 10 bucks?” He then repeated, “I’m just kidding! Or am I?” no fewer than three times, to awkward silence.

Sony ending its PlayStation Stars loyalty programme ahead of future evolution

by admin May 21, 2025

Sony is ending its PlayStation Stars loyalty programme, in its current form, after three years.

The programme first started in July 2022 and allowed players to earn reward points to be redeemed for PSN wallet funds and other products on the store. It became available in the UK later that year.

However, Sony is now ending support for the programme as it evaluates “the types of activities our players respond best to”, though it could return in some form in the future.

Ghost of Yōtei – The Onryō’s List | PS5 GamesWatch on YouTube

From today, new members to the PlayStation Stars programme will no longer be accepted and if current members cancel they won’t be able to rejoin this version of the programme – all earned Points will be lost.

Current PlayStation Stars members can still earn points and products until 23rd July 3:59pm UK time (7:59am PDT, 11:59pm JST). No new campaigns will be available after this time.

This version of PlayStation Stars will fully end on 2nd November 2026. Current members can still earn points until this time. Digital Collectibles will still be accessible after these changes take place.

“Since launching the programme, we’ve learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends,” said the company on the PlayStation Blog.

“Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this programme, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings.”

At the launch of PlayStation Stars, Sony confirmed its Digital Collectibles were not NFTs, were not tradable, and did not leverage blockchain technology.

It’s unclear how the programme will evolve, but it would seem this isn’t the last time we’ll see PlayStation Stars.

U.Today presents the top three news stories over the past day.

Mysterious new whale pulls 260,000,000 DOGE out of Robinhood

According to blockchain transaction data, yesterday, May 20, 260 million DOGE were spotted leaving Robinhood, a major U.S.-based brokerage platform. The value of the moved funds stands at over $57 million. The funds were transferred to an unknown wallet in two transactions, with the first one carrying the majority of coins, 210 million DOGE worth at $46 million and the second moving another 50 million DOGE to the same address. Currently, the final destination wallet holds around 420 million DOGE valued at nearly $92 million. Notably, the receiving wallet is not linked to any known exchange or custodial platform, and it has recently seen a steady increase in incoming Dogecoin. The transactions are part of a bigger trend of Dogecoin moving away from exchanges and into long-term storage, though the exact purpose of these transfers remains unclear.

XRP ETF delayed by SEC; When will it be approved?

The U.S. SEC has delayed its decision on 21Shares’s proposal to launch a spot-based XRP ETF. However, this should not be viewed as a negative sign, given that it is a standard practice for the agency. The proposal review period can last up to a total of 240 days, during which the SEC gathers public opinions and analyzes pertinent data. The 21Shares filing was originally submitted on March 11, which means the delay notice falls within the normal time frame. Earlier this year, the agency also delayed applications from Franklin Templeton and Bitwise. However, it should be kept in mind that Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs faced similar postponements before eventual approval. Despite the delays, industry experts and market analysts remain optimistic; according to Bloomberg, spot-based XRP ETFs are expected to receive approval by the end of the year. However, there is also a chance they could be approved as soon as June.

137% Shiba Inu (SHIB) surge in 24 hours: What’s happening?

Shiba Inu has experienced a remarkable 137% surge in a single day, driven by increased large transaction activity that has brought the meme coin back into focus. Despite this, the price remains near $0.000014, just above a key support level at the 100 EMA, which triggered its recent breakout, but it is close to losing the 26 EMA, a short-term trend indicator. Technical analysis shows declining volume despite the price holding near highs, suggesting potential buyer exhaustion or an upcoming reversal, especially given the high concentration of large holders. On-chain signals and retail interest are still bearish, with a decreasing number of Telegram users and mixed metrics, though liquidity remains strong with over $36 million in trading volume. SHIB could retest $0.000016 if the volume resurges and it bounces off the 100 EMA, but if support fails, it could drop to $0.000012 or lower.

Microsoft’s AI security chief accidentally reveals Walmart’s AI plans after protest

by admin May 21, 2025

Microsoft’s head of security for AI, Neta Haiby, accidentally revealed confidential messages about Walmart’s use of Microsoft’s AI tools during a Build talk that was disrupted by protesters.

The Build livestream was muted and the camera pointed down, but the session resumed moments later after the protesters were escorted out. In the aftermath, Haiby then accidentally switched to Microsoft Teams while sharing her screen, revealing confidential internal messages about Walmart’s upcoming use of Microsoft’s Entra and AI gateway services.

Haiby was co-hosting a Build session on best security practices for AI, alongside Sarah Bird, Microsoft’s head of responsible AI, when two former Microsoft employees disrupted the talk to protest against the company’s cloud contracts with the Israeli government.

“Sarah, you are whitewashing the crimes of Microsoft in Palestine, how dare you talk about responsible AI when Microsoft is fueling the genocide in Palestine,” shouted Hossam Nasr, an organizer with the protest group No Azure for Apartheid, and a former Microsoft employee who was fired for holding a vigil outside Microsoft’s headquarters for Palestinians killed in Gaza.

Walmart is one of Microsoft’s biggest corporate customers, and already uses the company’s Azure OpenAI service for some of its AI work. “Walmart is ready to rock and roll with Entra Web and AI Gateway,” says one of Microsoft’s cloud solution architects in the Teams messages. The chat session also quoted a Walmart AI engineer, saying: “Microsoft is WAY ahead of Google with AI security. We are excited to go down this path with you.”

We asked Microsoft to comment on this protest and the Teams messages, but the company did not respond in time for publication.

Both of the protesters involved in this latest Microsoft Build disruption were former Microsoft employees, with Vaniya Agrawal appearing alongside Nasr. Agrawal interrupted Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, former CEO Steve Ballmer, and CEO Satya Nadella later during the company’s 50th anniversary event last month. Agrawal was dismissed shortly after putting in her two weeks’ notice at Microsoft before the protest, according to an email seen by The Verge.

This latest protest comes days after Microsoft announced last week that it had conducted an internal review and used an unnamed external firm to assess how its technology is used in the war in Gaza. Microsoft says that its relationship with Israel’s Ministry of Defense (IMOD) is “structured as a standard commercial relationship” and that it has “found no evidence that Microsoft’s Azure and AI technologies, or any of our other software, have been used to harm people or that IMOD has failed to comply with our terms of service or our AI Code of Conduct.”

Steel City Interactive has announced a partnership with recruitment agency Amiqus as it looks to scale its technical and creative teams.

The Sheffield-based studio has begun a recruitment drive to support the future of its Undisputed franchise, which fully launched last October and has since surpassed one million copies.

It’s currently looking for experienced developers in engineering, art, and design.

“[Our] recruitment drive represents a studio with long-term ambitions not just for Undisputed as a game, but for Steel City Interactive itself as a leading creative force in gaming,” the developer’s recently appointed VP of studio Tim Coupe tells GamesIndustry.biz.

“Our direction points towards greater technical polish, deeper player engagement, and Undisputed as the flagship franchise in a revitalised category.”

Steel City Interactive was founded in 2020 by brothers Ash, Asif, and Asad Habib.

“Steel City Interactive is undoubtedly on an impressive growth trajectory under their new leadership,” Amiqus business manager Liz Prince added.

“And as the studio continues to expand, Amiqus is delighted to be working alongside the team as their recruitment partner of choice, as we deploy our new Amiqus Alliance service for them.

“It is an exciting time for the growth of the games development sector in the region, and we are looking forward to playing our part.”

Ripple Issues Stern Warning To Investors As CEO Celebrates New XRP Milestone

by admin May 21, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

XRP is about to start drawing a fresh wave of attention from institutional investors, following a major update that reflects the token’s growing relevance in the crypto market.

The latest milestone involves the listing of XRP and Micro XRP futures on the CME Group, which marks a notable milestone for the cryptocurrency. Ripple’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, recently took to social media to share this exciting announcement, while Ripple issued a critical alert for crypto investors.

Ripple CEO Hails Institutional Breakthrough For XRP

Brad Garlinghouse took to the social media platform X to mark what he described as a key institutional milestone for XRP: the official launch of both XRP and Micro XRP futures contracts on CME Group, the largest derivatives marketplace in the world. Interestingly, the contracts were quick to become active, as Garlinghouse also confirmed that the first block trade on CME had already been executed by Hidden Road, a prominent institutional trading firm.

This move introduces XRP to a regulated derivatives framework, which traditionally appeals to asset managers, hedge funds, and other large-scale investors. It places XRP in the same category as Bitcoin and Ethereum, both of which saw improved investor confidence and deeper market activity after their own CME futures listings.

As such, the launch of XRP and Micro XRP futures plays well into the current market dynamics for XRP, especially in terms of growing institutional interest. Furthermore, the presence of XRP futures on the CME marketplace shows that the cryptocurrency is maturing into a more structured financial asset, which could influence future decisions of the SEC around Spot XRP ETFs.

CME Group XRP futures are available in both a micro-sized (2,500 XRP) and a larger-sized contract (50,000 XRP). According to Giovanni Vicioso, Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products at CME Group, more than $19 million in notional volume was traded on the first day of launch.

Ripple Issues Major Alert To Investors

Shortly after the announcement of the futures launch, Ripple’s official account posted a public service warning highlighting a rise in scams targeting the XRP community. The company urged users to stay alert, noting that no official Ripple representative would ever ask individuals to send XRP. The warning included a reminder to avoid suspicious links and noted the importance of verifying accounts before engaging.

This alert is based on a pattern in the crypto space, as scam activity tends to rise when markets are bullish. One such example is the recent arrest of a Wellington-based man by the New Zealand Police in connection with a crime syndicate accused of stealing $450 million New Zealand dollars ($265 million). Crypto exchange Coinbase was also recently subjected to a phishing attack that resulted in the leak of a small fraction of user data.

At the time of writing, XRP is trading at $2.35, down by 8.7% in a seven-day timeframe.

The Street Fighter Movie Could Star The Greatest WWE Champion Of All Time

by admin May 21, 2025

The long-in-development Street Fighter movie may have just landed some undisputed star power, as a former WWE champion and DC Comics hero have reportedly been cast for the film.

According to Deadline, WWE superstar Roman Reigns, Jason Momoa (A Minecraft Movie), Andrew Koji (Bullet Train), and Noah Centino (Warfare) are currently in talks to star. If the actors are involved, then the Street Fighter movie will have recruited some big acting muscle. Mamoa previously appeared as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe of live-action films and he’ll be playing the legendary intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to arrive in June 2026.

Reigns is another well-known face on television, as he held the Undisputed WWE Championship for a staggering 1,316 days. The former champion also appeared on the big screen in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Meanwhile, Koji has appeared in multiple movies and TV shows over the years, flexing his martial arts skills in projects like Warrior. Representatives for the actors have declined to comment to Deadline on whether they are or are not involved in the project. As for Centino, he appeared in the gritty action film Warfare, which was directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland.

The latest live-action incarnation of Street Fighter has been in development since 2023. At one point, Talk To Me‘s Danny and Michael Philippou were attached to direct, but they later left and were replaced by Bad Trip director Kitao Sakurai. Legendary Pictures is co-producing the film with Capcom, the developer and publisher of the Street Fighter games.

First released in 1987, the lore of the franchise has been expanded over several games, and the mainline entries have revolved around a group of elite martial artists taking part in a major fighting tournament organized by M. Bison, the leader of the sinister Shadaloo syndicate who seeks to take over the world. The first Street Fighter live-action film was released in 1994 and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme in the lead–as well as a scene-stealing Raul Julia in his final theatrical performance–and in 2009, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was released.

The massive success of a few recent video game movie adaptations–Sonic, Mario, Minecraft–has supercharged Hollywood’s desire to turn more games into movies. Dozens of video game adaptations are also in varying stages of development, and upcoming projects like Watch Dogs and Mortal Kombat 2.

Impossible Movies Deserve A Great New Game

by admin May 21, 2025

The fuse has been lit and the mission has been accepted. That’s right folks, it’s time for a new Mission: Impossible film. Final Reckoning, the latest entry in the popular action franchise, arrives in theaters this week. But if this new film has you all excited about the series again and you want to play a Mission: Impossible video game, well, bad news: It’s been over 20 years since the last one. That’s not cool. It’s time for a new MI game!

Nintendo Switch 2 Price Is Set at $450 for Now, But Could Go Higher

This article was originally published on July 13, 2023. It has been updated as part of Kotaku’s Mission: Impossible Week.

The Mission: Impossible franchise technically started as a spy-themed television series from the 1960s, which got a sequel series in the ‘80s. But when most people talk about the Mission Impossible franchise in 2025, they are likely referring to the long-running action film franchise starring Tom Cruise that has grown into something much larger and over-the-top than the old TV shows. These films, which began in 1996, typically showcase Cruise risking his life in at least three or four large stunts and also, bizarrely, have only gotten better with each release. A globe-trotting action-adventure franchise that makes tons of money, is loved by critics, and has a massive fanbase seems like ideal material for a video game adaptation. Oddly, that’s not been the case.

Since the beginning of the franchise, only five Mission: Impossible video games have been released. (Confusingly, four of them are just named Mission: Impossible.) The first game launched in 1990 for the NES. The second game was released the following year for DOS. These two were based on the 1980s sequel series that aired on ABC.

Then in 1998, two years after the first Tom Cruise film, another Mission: Impossible game launched on the Nintendo 64. This one has some fans, and played a lot like a third-person spin on Rare’s popular GoldenEye 007 game. Two years after that, right before the second film hit theaters, a very short and not-good Mission: Impossible game landed on Game Boy Color. However, this game did include a neat feature that let players use the Game Boy as a remote control.

Finally, in 2003, Mission: Impossible — Operation Surma launched on PlayStation 2 and later GameCube. This third-person action-adventure spy-thriller takes place between the events of Mission: Impossible II and the third film, but is also never directly referenced in the films and doesn’t even feature the likeness of Tom Cruise. It was essentially a Metal Gear Solid/Splinter Cell clone and in 2025 has been mostly forgotten, like the rest of the M:I video games.

It’s time for a new Mission: Impossible video game

And…that’s it! After 2003, we stopped getting new Mission: Impossible games. I understand that the film series hit a six-year lull between the second and third, but after 2011’s Ghost Protocol, the franchise kept getting bigger and better with each entry. 2018’s Mission: Impossible Fallout is probably the best film in the series. (Dead Reckoning, sadly, couldn’t keep the trend going.)

And yet, even as the franchise grows bigger and bigger, no new video games are on the horizon. What a shame! So many moments in recent MI films feel almost like setpieces from AAA video games of the last decade. It makes sense to me that this series would translate well into a modern video game.

I understand that over the last decade or so, we’ve stopped getting crappy games based on popular films. And I’ve been mostly fine with that, as the vast majority of games based on films were awful and not worth playing. Then again, we are getting a new 007 game from the Hitman devs, and a new Avatar one from Ubisoft, so it’s not like games based on movies are impossible to make these days.

And I think a Mission: Impossible game—if done right and given enough time and resources—could be amazing. Honestly, a game where you just recreate all the famous and dangerous stunts from the films would be great, like a new Stuntman but based entirely on Mission: Impossible scenes. Actually, it’s been a long time since we got a good Stuntman game, too.

Okay, new plan: Someone convince the right people to fund the development of a new Stuntman-like game based on Tom Cruise’s wildest Mission: Impossible stunts. That’s the game I want. Thank you.
