How to play Wordle

Wordle’s a daily guessing game, where the goal is to correctly uncover today’s five letter word in six goes or less. An incorrect letter shows up as a grey box. A correct letter in the wrong space turns up yellow. And the correct letter in the right place shows up as green. There’s no time limit to worry about, and don’t forget that some letters might be used more than once.

What’s the best Wordle starting word?

Generally you want to pick something with a good mix of common consonants and vowels in it as your Wordle opener, as this is most likely to return some early green and yellow letters. Words like SLATE, CHIME, and REACT all work, but feel free to find your own favourite.

Is Wordle getting harder?

Wordle is not getting harder!

There will always be the occasional day where the answer is the name of a body part, has a sneaky double vowel, or a word obscure enough to send everyone rushing off to a dictionary. But the daily answers, edited by Tracy Bennett, are still a good mix of common terms and tougher challenges.

Remember that if you’re craving more of a challenge, you can enable Hard Mode under the ⚙️ options menu. This option doesn’t make the words themselves harder, but it requires that “any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses.”

How did Wordle begin?

Wordle is the creation of Josh Wardle, and began life as a small personal project before its public release in 2021. From there it’s gone on to become a global phenomenon, attracting a dedicated daily audience, billions of plays, a whole host of competitors, and even a seven-figure sale to the New York Times where it’s become a mainstay of daily games alongside the crosswords and Connections.

SoftBank, Ark May Back Stablecoin Giant Tether in Massive Funding Round: Report

by admin September 27, 2025

In brief

  • Tether is reportedly seeking up to $15-20 billion for a 3% stake in its firm.
  • Ark Invest and Softbank are reportedly in discussions to participate in the raise.
  • The raise would value the firm at around $500 billion, making it one of the largest private companies in the world.

Tech investors SoftBank Group and Ark Investment are among the firms discussing participation in a major Tether fundraise that could  value the stablecoin issuer at $500 billion, according to a Friday Bloomberg report.

The two groups’ interest follows three days after news that El Salvador-based Tether was looking to raise $15-20 billion for a 3% equity stake. Bloomberg first reported this story, citing two unnamed sources, although another source said the amount could be less.

The initiative could help push Tether deeper into mainstream finance, the report said.

At $500 billion, Tether would rank among the world’s largest private companies, putting it in the same conversation as artificial intelligence firm OpenAI and Elon Musk’s space exploration and transportation firm, SpaceX, which received similar valuations.

Tether, which issues the world’s largest stablecoin—USDT—plan’s to further expand its footprint, anticipating the debut of a new U.S. regulated stablecoin—USAT—by the end of the year.

Softbank is a Japan-based multinational investment company. Ark is a U.S.-based asset manager. Both have been active in the crypto space.

The firm has been creating more of a presence in the United States since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump last year, recently adding former White House crypto advisor Bo Hines as a strategic advisor. It also maintains a close relationship with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, whose previous firm Cantor Fitzgerald is advising Tether in its fundraising talks and also custodies all its assets, according to the Bloomberg report.

Tether and stablecoins have been at the forefront of crypto conversation for the bulk of this year, highlighted by the U.S.’s passage of the GENIUS Act, a regulatory framework for the trading and issuance of the fiat-backed tokens.

Its USDT stablecoin sits at a $173 billion market cap, making it the third largest crypto asset by market cap at the time of writing and more than double the market cap of Circle’s USDC stablecoin.

Stablecoins as a whole have added more than $122 billion in market cap since this time last year to reach a total of nearly $300 billion, according to data from DeFi Llama. Earlier this year, U.K. bank Standard Chartered predicted that the market could reach $750 billion by the end of 2026.

Decrypt reached out to Tether for comment.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds adds Mega Man next year, with post-launch roadmap now revealed

by admin September 27, 2025

Sega has revealed the post-launch roadmap for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, including last night’s announcement that Mega Man will be joining next year as paid DLC.

Capcom’s iconic hero will be joined by Proto Man too, plus there will be a Dr. Wily’s Castle course and a vehicle inspired by canine companion Rush.

The DLC will be available in Q2 next year in the third patch of the game’s Season Pass. That begins later this year with the addition of Minecraft and SpongeBob Squarepants, with Pac-Man to follow early next year.

Then, Q3 of 2026 will see the arrival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and anime Avatar Legends. Each Season Pass Content Pack includes playable characters, a new vehicle, a new track, emotes and sounds.

In addition, there will be a number of free updates adding new characters and more. Hatsune Miku and Sonic Prime characters are available at launch for Digital Deluxe owners. Then later this year Joker from Persona 5 and Ichiban from Like A Dragon will be added, along with another unknown character.

More free additions will arrive in each quarter next year. You can see the roadmap in the image below.

Mega Man’s inclusion leaked last week, so his reveal at last night’s PlayStation State of Play came as little surprise.

However, the back of the physical box includes artwork for Sega Saturn icon NiGHTS, with fans presuming the jester character will be one of the free characters coming to the game.

Who else do you hope to see join Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds?

DJI loses lawsuit over Pentagon’s ‘Chinese military company’ list

by admin September 27, 2025

It’s been nearly a year since DJI sued the Department of Defense over its designation as a “Chinese military company.” On Friday, a judge ruled against the drone maker. US District Judge Paul Friedman said the DoD presented enough evidence that DJI contributes to the Chinese military.

“Indeed, DJI acknowledges that its technology can and is used in military conflict but asserts that its policies prohibit such use,” Friedman wrote in his opinion. “Whether or not DJI’s policies prohibit military use is irrelevant. That does not change the fact that DJI’s technology has both substantial theoretical and actual military application.”

DJI challenged the designation in October 2024. It told the court it is “neither owned nor controlled by the Chinese military.” The company claimed in its filing that it suffered “ongoing financial and reputational harm” as a result of the inclusion. The designation can prevent companies from accessing grants, contracts, loans and other programs.

The drone maker has a contentious history with the US government. The Department of Commerce added it and 77 other companies to its Entity List in 2020, effectively blocking US businesses from dealing with them. A year later, the Treasury Department included DJI on its “Chinese military-industrial complex companies” list. That designation was for its alleged involvement in the surveillance of Uyghur Muslim people in China. Last year, US customs began holding up DJI’s consumer drones at the border.

The company now faces a potential import ban in the US by the end of this year. The ban was initially scheduled for 2024. But a clause in the $895 billion US Defense Bill gave it a year to prove that its products don’t pose a national security risk. In March, DJI pleaded with five national security agencies (DHS, DoD, FBI, NSA, and ODNI) to begin evaluating its products “right away.”

After Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, gacha master HoYoverse set its sights on the Animal Crossing-like cosy sim genre

by admin September 27, 2025

Petit Planet – a new cosy life sim from the creators of Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail – has been announced.

The game currently has PC and mobile versions confirmed, with “additional platforms” in development according to the official press release alongside the reveal. Petit Planet has you build up and develop your own tiny planet, eventually venturing out into a galaxy filled with other planets owned by cutesy NPCs.

A reveal trailer (which you can watch below) showcases what the game will look like, with a character building up a nice little home, meeting various animal friends, before hopping in a car and taking to the stars to meet a cast of other furry fellows on their own home planets.

Here’s the Petit Planet reveal trailer!Watch on YouTube

Those interested can pre-register for the game right now on the official website, as well as sign up for upcoming beta tests. There’s no word as to when these beta tests will occur or when the sign ups will close as of writing.

Rumours around a HoYoverse life sim have been circulating for a while, with the internal name Astaweave Haven known thanks to early leaks. However, this recent reveal marks the first official word on the game as well as the first peak we’ve been able to get of polished gameplay.

There is no information on how monetisation will work for Petit Planet, though given this is a HoYoverse game the expectation is that the game will feature gacha mechanics as found in Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero.

This isn’t the only game HoYoverse has in the works. The developer revealed Honkai: Nexus Anima earlier this year, a Pokemon-style creature collector and auto-battler. Petit Planet has entered a somewhat contested genre, interestingly enough. Both Pocket Pair and Nintendo have announced their own cosy farm sims in Palfarm and Pokémon Pokopia.

SEC, FINRA Probe Crypto Treasury Firms For Unusual Trading

by admin September 27, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) are reportedly investigating suspicious trading patterns in the shares of certain companies that have announced crypto treasury strategies.

SEC, FINRA Scrutinize Suspicious Trading Moves

On Thursday, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that financial regulators have reached out to some of the over 200 companies with Digital Asset Treasury (DAT) strategies after observing unusual trading activity in the days leading up to the announcement of their crypto treasury strategy.

People familiar with the matter told the news media outlet that the SEC and the FINRA have examined unusual trading moves in the shares of multiple unnamed companies that announced that they would adopt a DAT strategy this year.

Reportedly, the regulators have raised concerns in letters and conversations about “unusually high trading volumes and sharp stock-price gains” that preceded the announcement that these companies would make cryptocurrencies their core corporate strategy.

SEC officials have warned these companies about potential violations of Regulation Fair Disclosure, the WSJ sources alleged. As the news media outlet noted, the rule prohibits public companies from “selectively disclosing material, nonpublic information to investors, analysts, and other market participants who might trade on the information.”

According to some lawyers, these types of FINRA letters usually mark the start of serious investigations into insider trading. However, it remains unclear whether the financial regulators are pursuing enforcement actions against any of these companies or investors.

Former SEC enforcement lawyer and now SEC defense attorney David Chase told WSJ that “when those go out, it really stirs the pot. It’s typically the first step in an investigation. Whether it goes full, full length, it’s anybody’s guess.”

The sources noted that, in some cases, the secrecy of the DAT announcements can be compromised, leading to the unusual stock activity ahead of the official statements. Meanwhile, lawyers who have worked on crypto-treasury deals affirmed that information leaks can also harm pricing transactions.

“If the stock price is highly volatile in the days leading up to pricing a transaction, that could actually make it very difficult to agree on a price for the transaction and put it at risk of execution,” Justin Platt, a partner at law firm Goodwin, told WSJ.

Crypto DAT’s Momentum Continues

Over the past few months, the crypto treasury strategy trend, pioneered by Michael Saylor’s Strategy, has gained momentum, with 212 new companies announcing plans to raise hundreds of billions of dollars to launch DAT strategies, the WSJ noted, citing data from crypto advisory firm Architect Partners.

Throughout September, multiple companies have unveiled crypto treasury strategies focused on Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX), and Solana (SOL). As reported by Bitcoinist, Solana-focused DATs have seen hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the strategies this month.

Recently, Helius Medical Technology revealed the launch of a $500 million SOL treasury strategy backed by Pantera Capital and Summer Capital. Similarly, Nasdaq-listed Fitell Corporation, a global provider of fitness equipment and health solutions, has unveiled the launch of the first Solana-based digital asset treasury in Australia.

Meanwhile, the top crypto treasuries have continued to accumulate Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), the leading digital assets. BitMine, the largest ETH-focused treasury, recently surpassed the 2 million ETH milestone, while Strategy, the leading Bitcoin and crypto treasury, purchased another 850 BTC earlier this week.

Crypto Market Battles Sea of Red and Growing Fear, But HYPE Floats

by admin September 27, 2025

In brief

  • Hyperliquid surges 9.26% to $44.11 as the only top 10 crypto in green while the rest of the market tanks 1.8%.
  • BNB drops 0.14% to $947.55, as the worst performer in top 10 after the Aster-driven spike fades.
  • The Crypto Fear and Greed Index marks the most bearish reading since April. Here’s what the charts say traders can expect.

The crypto market is nursing a nasty hangover after a major panic episode earlier this week, with the total market cap of crypto sliding 1.8% to $3.75 trillion as the infamous Red September curse threatens to claim another victim.

Yet in this sea of red, there’s at least one token staying afloat: Hyperliquid’s HYPE is up a defiant 9.26% and standing as the only cryptocurrency in the top 11 showing green on the day.

Meanwhile, traditional markets are playing a different tune entirely—the S&P 500 edged up 0.22% to 6,619 points while gold climbed 0.33% to $3,762 per ounce, showing investors still have appetite for some risk assets, just not crypto risk—at least not right now. What’s more, President Donald Trump announced a package of tariffs set to take effect October 1, which has the potential to send risk assets scrambling for cover.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index has plunged to 28, firmly in “fear” territory and the most pessimistic reading since April, when Trump’s previous tariff announcements sent markets into a tailspin.

Even still, there’s a fascinating subplot unfolding in the perpetual futures DEX wars that’s turning conventional wisdom on its head.

Hyperliquid price: The HYPE is back?

While its rival Aster has been stealing headlines with a jaw-dropping surge since its launch last week, Hyperliquid is quietly mounting its own comeback.

Hyperliquid is both its layer-1 blockchain network and a decentralized exchange that specializes in perpetual futures—derivatives contracts that never expire and allow crypto traders to both hedge risk and essentially bet on the future price of digital assets, such as Bitcoin.

The exchange is powered by a token of the same name, which trades as HYPE, and both the exchange and the token have experienced a rush of interest over the last several months. For context, despite the recent ups and downs, HYPE is up more than 20% in the last three months and up close to 600% in the last year, currently commanding an impressive $12.2 billion market cap.

The Hyperliquid token surged today from a low of $40.376 to its current price of $44.114, representing a 9.26% gain in a market where everything else is bleeding.

Hyperliquid (HYPE) price. Image: Tradingview

Looking at the technical breakdown, HYPE is displaying the sort of behavior that traders would interpret as potentially the end of a major correction. The price of the coin, after all, is down close to 10% in the last 30 days.

The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, is one such technical indicator that traders rely on. RSI measures price momentum on a scale from 0 to 100, where readings above 70 signal overbought conditions and below 30 suggesting oversold.

Hyperliquid sits at 41—technically bearish territory, but here’s what traders need to understand: After a token corrects from $56 to $40, an RSI at 41 actually signals healthy consolidation rather than weakness. This is like a reload zone where smart money accumulates before the next leg up. Traders typically see RSI readings between 30-45 after major corrections—notice the chart is still on an upwards trajectory—as buying opportunities rather than sell signals.

The Average Directional Index, or ADX, for HYPE is at 29, which shows strengthening trend momentum. ADX measures how strong a price trend is regardless of direction—readings above 25 confirm an established trend, and at 29, we’re seeing HYPE break out of its consolidation phase. The major dip cooled the ADX a lot, but still wasn’t enough to wipe out the upward trend in place.

Exponential moving averages, or EMAs, give traders a sense of price resistances and supports by taking the average price of an asset over the short, medium, and long term. Hyperliquid is still a young coin, without the trading history of an asset like Bitcoin, but the EMA picture appears bullish.

At the moment, HYPE’s 50-day EMA is sitting above its 200-day EMA, meaning the average price over the short term is still higher than the average price over the long term. This configuration typically signals that short-term momentum is overpowering long-term pessimism, suggesting the path of least resistance is higher.

But as a warning sign, the gap between both EMAs is closing, which could potentially lead to a death cross formation (when the EMA50 moves below the EMA200). In this scenario, some traders may opt to set up buy orders near the EMA200 for those thinking the token may continue its bearish correction before bouncing.

On Myriad, a prediction market developed by Decrypt’s parent company Dastan, sentiment on HYPE hasn’t yet reached the bullishness exhibited in the charts. At the moment, Myriad traders don’t expect the price of HYPE to rise to $69 any time soon, placing those odds at just 30% when measured against the odds of it dropping below the $40 mark.

Key Levels:

  • Immediate support: $36.00 (EMA200)
  • Strong support: $28.00 (visible on the chart as previous resistance)
  • Immediate resistance: $48.00 (EMA50)
  • Strong resistance: $$56.00 (previous high zone)

BNB price: Paying the price for Aster’s success

The story of BNB today is a classic “sell the news” scenario, as the Binance-issued token drops 4.23% to $947.55 in the last 24 hours, making it the worst performer among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap.

As discussed earlier this week on Decrypt, BNB had been on fire lately, and was on Tuesday the only coin in the top 10 by market cap in the green. Much of the price movement could be attributed to an increase in activity on the BNB network as a result of the explosive growth of Aster, a Hyperliquid competitor on the BNB Chain.

But, as we’ve seen so many times in markets: what goes up, must eventually come down. And at the moment, the, er, hype around Aster has slowed. And BNB now appears to be taking a hit as a result.

BNB price. Image: Tradingview

BNB’s RSI is at 51, which sits right at neutral and typically indicates a market in equilibrium waiting for the next catalyst. For traders, this dead-center reading often precedes sharp moves in either direction as the market breaks out of indecision.

The ADX at 36 confirms a strong established trend, but the Squeeze Momentum Indicator shows a bearish impulse in underway.

When ADX is high but momentum is bearish, it typically means sellers are in control and dip buyers should be cautious. This combination often results in continued pressure until ADX drops below 25, signaling trend exhaustion.

Looking at the price action on the chart, BNB opened the day around $946, reached a high near $959, but has since retreated to $947.55. Today’s doji (a candlestick with no body, basically showing that the opening and closing prices are almost the same)shows significant volatility and selling pressure at round number resistance. The 50-day EMA sits well above the 200-day EMA, maintaining a bullish longer-term structure, but the immediate price action below both the opening price and the psychological $960 level suggests near-term weakness.

The catalyst for BNB’s initial surge was clear: BNB Chain’s 24-hour perpetual volume stands at $36 billion, overtaking Hyperliquid’s $10.8 billion, driven primarily by the meteoric rise of Aster. However, today’s correction suggests traders are taking profits on the Aster-driven rally.

Image: Dune

Key Levels:

  • Immediate support: $920 (visible support on chart)
  • Strong support: $880-$900 (EMA50l)
  • Immediate resistance: $1,000-$1,080 (psychological round number and all-time high)

Spotify removes 75 million “spammy” songs as it cracks down on AI-generated music

by admin September 27, 2025

Spotify has announced a sweeping crackdown on AI misuse and spam uploads, confirming it has already removed more than 75 million “spammy” songs in the past year.

The platform said this move is part of a broader effort to protect artists against impersonation, fraudulent uploads, and the spread of low-quality AI-generated tracks. Spotify also outlined new rules and tools designed to safeguard artist identity and improve transparency for listeners.

The changes come as generative AI continues to reshape the music industry, raising concerns over spam, deepfake vocals, and deceptive uploads.

Spotify’s new rules & spam filter explained

Spotify has introduced a new policy specifically addressing AI voice clones and vocal deepfakes. Unauthorized impersonation of an artist’s voice will not be permitted unless it is officially licensed. The company is also expanding its measures to stop fraudulent uploads made to appear under another artist’s profile.

Back in July, it was reported that Spotify was publishing AI-generated songs of several different musicians who had died years before.

To combat mass uploads and track manipulation, Spotify will roll out a new spam detection system this fall. The filter will identify accounts engaging in tactics such as duplicates, artificially short tracks, and other spam strategies, then prevent those tracks from being recommended.

AI disclosures in credits

Spotify is supporting a new industry standard for AI disclosures in music credits. This will allow artists and labels to indicate how AI was used in the creation of a track, from vocals to instrumentation. The disclosures will be displayed across the app as they are provided by distributors and partners.

Instagram: The Velvet Sundown

Spotify said the updates are designed to ensure artists remain in control of how AI is used in their work, while maintaining trust for listeners as the technology becomes more widely adopted.

Back in June, Spotify listeners began to discover a new band by the name of The Velvet Sundown, and many quickly accused it of being entirely AI-generated.

The band responded on social media in an attempt to deny those accusations, but they later revealed they were, in fact, AI.

3 reasons Little Pepe is stealing attention in the memecoin market

by admin September 27, 2025

Disclosure: This article does not represent investment advice. The content and materials featured on this page are for educational purposes only.

Little Pepe presale hits $26m, drawing attention from Dogecoin fans with 16b tokens sold.

Summary

  • Little Pepe presale surges past $26m, offering memecoin utility via Layer-2 blockchain.
  • It combines viral culture with real infrastructure, outperforming traditional DOGE hype.
  • Stage 13 buyers access fast, low-fee, sniper-resistant blockchain built for memecoins.

While DOGE still enjoys its loyal community and whale support, a new contender is pulling in more hype, investor interest, and fresh capital: Little Pepe (LILPEPE).

Now in Stage 13 of its presale and priced at just $0.0022 per token, LILPEPE has already raised over $26 million and sold over 16 billion tokens. Audited by CertiK and listed on CoinMarketCap before even launching, it has quickly gone from an emerging project to one of the most discussed names in crypto circles. And the reasons it is stealing attention from Dogecoin can be summed up in three key areas.

A memecoin with real infrastructure

Dogecoin (DOGE) has always thrived on simplicity. It wasn’t built for utility; it was built as a joke, and over time, the joke became an asset worth billions. But in today’s competitive memecoin market, investors are increasingly looking for projects that combine cultural appeal with tangible innovation.

That’s where Little Pepe stands out. Instead of existing only as a meme token, LILPEPE is building an Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain explicitly designed for memecoins. This network will be faster, cheaper, and resistant to sniper bots, solving some of the biggest frustrations retail investors face when participating in early token launches.

By doing so, LILPEPE isn’t just another token chasing viral attention, it’s aiming to become the foundation for the next wave of meme projects. This infrastructure play adds legitimacy and long-term potential, giving LILPEPE an advantage over Dogecoin, which remains largely unchanged from its original design.

While DOGE’s value is tied almost exclusively to community sentiment and adoption as a payment method, LILPEPE is building something that could create ongoing demand regardless of hype cycles.

Viral campaigns that drive engagement

One of Dogecoin’s greatest strengths has always been its community, powered by memes, social media trends, and celebrity endorsements. Yet in 2025, LILPEPE is proving it understands the modern meme economy even better.

The project has launched a $777,000 giveaway, where 10 winners each receive $77,000 in tokens. In addition, there’s a special promotion for buyers between Stage 12 and Stage 17, creating another layer of excitement and urgency among presale participants.

These campaigns are fueling non-stop chatter across social media, keeping LILPEPE in the spotlight as one of the most viral tokens in the market. Memecoins thrive on attention, and LILPEPE has engineered a system where community engagement feeds directly into momentum.

Explosive growth potential from a low base

Another reason LILPEPE is overshadowing DOGE comes down to simple math. With Dogecoin already carrying a multi-billion-dollar market cap, the chances of it delivering another 100x return are slim.

While DOGE could rally in this cycle, its growth will likely be steady rather than spectacular. LILPEPE, however, is still priced at $0.0022 in presale, leaving enormous room for upside. Analysts predict it could climb to $0.10 after exchange listings, representing a 45x gain from its current level.

Longer-term forecasts suggest $1 to $3 by 2026 is achievable if its Layer-2 ecosystem takes off, mirroring the life-changing returns SHIB delivered in 2021. The choice between holding DOGE for a potential 2x or 3x versus betting on LILPEPE for a potential 50x is clear for retail investors and even whales hunting exponential gains. While DOGE remains a safe cultural icon, LILPEPE offers the asymmetry that defines bull market success stories.

Conclusion

Dogecoin isn’t going away anytime soon, it has earned its crypto place and will likely remain relevant as one of the sector’s pioneers. But in 2025, the winds of attention are blowing toward projects that combine meme appeal with viral growth and genuine innovation. Little Pepe is leading that charge. With its ambitious Layer-2 infrastructure, viral community campaigns, and unmatched growth potential, it has already begun stealing the spotlight from DOGE. The $26 million presale, CertiK audit, and CoinMarketCap listing have only fueled the fire. As the bull run enters its most explosive phase, investors ask themselves a simple question: stick with the old meme legend, or take a shot at the new contender? For many, the answer is already clear, 2025 looks like the year of Little Pepe.

Legendary survival horror series Silent Hill has entered a new era this week with the arrival of the highly anticipated Silent Hill f. f aims to deliver Silent Hill’s themes of dreadful, psychological horror in a brand new setting, featuring new characters and a new combat system.

The combat here is a little more action-focused than in previous entries in the series, though the game still manages to feel dangerous at every turn. And while I had a delightfully macabre time with this elegant survival horror game, there were a few things I wish I’d known before jumping in. So, after spending tens of hours on this game in both Story and Hard mode, allow me to share with you what I learned while surviving the fog.

1. Don’t sleep on omamori

f may be a survival horror game, but it’s got a touch more build-crafting than you might expect. Not only can you improve Hinako’s max health, stamina, and sanity, you can also equip omamori to augment her abilities. You can increase the maximum amount of omamori slots by spending enough faith at shrines.

While you might be better off investing faith in improving your stamina first, you should still be regularly checking which omamori you’ve collected thus far to see where you can gently improve your combat skills. Plus, unlocking an extra omamori slot can be really advantageous.

2. Stop hanging onto those offerings

As you traverse the weird and terrifying world of Silent Hill f, you’ll find various offerings like antique combs and dried carcasses. These items have no utility beyond earning faith by offering them up at a shrine. But they do take up inventory space. On more than a few occasions, I found my inventory full only to see that there was some random offering I picked up a while back still taking up space, doing nothing but inconvenience me.

Check your inventory for offerings every time you’re at a shrine and you’ll have a lot more room to spare.

3. Invest in Stamina first, Sanity second

Stamina is Hinako’s super power. No, really! While our girl is plenty capable of bashing in a monster with a steel pipe, weapons break pretty quickly and there are more than a few occasions when you can easily be overwhelmed by enemies. You’ll need to be able to deftly get in and out of skirmishes with the creatures of the fog. For this reason, I recommend investing in improving your stamina first, followed by sanity second.

Sanity is what will allow you to pull off a pretty powerful counter attack, as well as Hinako’s charged light melee strike (this ability isn’t available at first).

Having a generous amount of stamina to maneuver out of the way of enemies, and enough sanity to deliver more powerful strikes, will help you get hit less and ensure enemies go down faster.

4. Don’t get into useless fights

The creatures of the fog might be creepy, but you’ll quickly realize that many of them are pretty easy to take out–especially if you’re used to combat-focused games like Dark Souls. That said, resist the urge to go wild and clear the town of monsters. While your weapons in the Dark Shrine segments of the game won’t break, the random pipes, crowbars, and kitchen knives you’ll pick up in Ebisugaoka are fragile little things and you can easily find yourself without a weapon all too easily.

Hinako can’t punch or kick, so if you’re without a weapon, you will have no offensive options against monsters. No bueno. Pick your battles strategically.

5. Higashi is kinda broken

Early on, I neglected eating any Higashi, which restores your stamina, because managing stamina seemed like a me-problem more than anything else. That was until I got to hard mode and had to take on one of the game’s early bosses and, well, I learned that this item is kinda broken.

Not only will eating it replenish your stamina, but you’ll have unlimited stamina after eating for a rather generous amount of time. This provides a perfect opportunity to spam your dodge while also getting in close to deliver a ton of hits without worrying about your stamina.

6. Keep your distance and use the camera to peer around corners before exposing yourself

Silent Hill f is pretty low on jump scares. But there are more than a few occasions in which monsters are eager to hop out from a hiding spot and attack you. When this happens, it’s more than likely that you’ll get pulled into a grab animation where the camera will zoom up to show the monster brutally attacking Hinako.

There’s no way out of this animation once it starts. Mash all the buttons you want, you’re not getting out of it without losing a chunk of your health. So in general, it’s best to try and leave some distance between you and any monster you happen to be fighting.

One way to do that is to use the third-person camera to peer around a corner where you suspect a monster may be hiding. The game will play some gentle static (though it sounds a little more like a record player looping on silence in this game) when a monster is nearby, so trust your eyes and ears to avoid unnecessary damage.

7. Counter attacks get easier once you unlock Hinako’s charged-up attack

Silent Hill f’s counter-attack can be a little challenging to pull off at first. You have to wait for the monster to flash in color, then hold down focus, then execute a heavy attack. Given that focusing drains your sanity meter pretty quickly, countering an enemy can be a weird, time-sensitive juggling act.

That said, once you unlock Hinako’s charged-up light attack, things get a little easier.

Since you have to hold down your focus button anyway to charge up your light attack, it has the added benefit of putting you in a good place to successfully pull off a counter-attack. While you’re waiting for Hinako’s attack to charge up, keep your eyes on the enemy. If they flash in color, forget the light attack and immediately hit your heavy attack button. Since you’re holding down your focus button, you’ll trigger the counter attack.

8. Nail that perfect dodge

Dodge just before an enemy strikes you, and Hinako will hack the foggy Matrix to slow down time and recharge her stamina instantly. It’s a pretty small window, but nailing this move is pretty essential for surviving the game’s tougher enemies. Hinako runs out of stamina pretty fast, so do everything you can to preserve and restore it.

9. Look out for helpful items during boss fights

Fragile weapons and sparse items can make you feel pretty on edge at times in Silent Hill f, especially during boss encounters. Fortunately, the game wants you to succeed more than you might think. While my first run through “Story” difficulty didn’t have me desperate for healing items, Hard mode is a different matter.

Fortunately, I’ve noticed that it’s pretty common for the game to throw some items your way during boss fights; you just need to keep your eyes peeled in corners and other non-obvious places.

10. Collect everything; read everything

Us masochists sure do love a game that kicks you when you’re down. But there’s so much more to Silent Hill f than the struggle against the fog’s shambling, knife-wielding monstrosities. Hinako is quite the diligent note-taker and artist, and you are missing out on so, so much if you don’t take the time to read the various character entries and in-game documents. Not only is the art design on-friggin’-point in f, but so much of the game’s wonderful use of metaphor and its dives into Japanese folklore are found in the journal.

11. Resist brute-forcing your way through puzzles

Trying to brute-force your way through most puzzles in SHf is a quick way to sink into some serious ennui. Puzzles in this game often have too many variables for this approach to succeed in a reasonable amount of time, and trying to do so is way more frustrating than just figuring them out as intended.

While the clues in it aren’t always the most obvious, spend some time studying Hinako’s notebook. You can always jump to it while looking at a puzzle via the on-screen prompt in the lower left-hand corner.

Silent Hill f won me over with its brutally dark tale first and foremost, but its combat has a satisfying rhythm that settles into place over the course of the game. Hopefully with these tips, you’ll end up with a few less broken weapons and even fewer scars from those mannequin psychopaths.
